Bilgisayar teknolojisindeki gelişmeler ulaştırma sektörünü de etkilemiş, özellikle son yıllarda Akıllı Ulaştırma Sistemleri adı altında bilişime dayalı sistemler geliştirilmiştir. Akıllı Ulaştırma Sistemleri'nin amacı, karayolu projelerinde yol güvenliğini artırmak, kara ulaştırmasının kapasitesini artırmak, karayolu ulaştırmasında kişisel hareket kabiliyetini, uyum ve konforu artırmak, kara ulaştırmasının çevre ve enerji kaynakları üzerindeki negatif etkilerini azaltmak, bireylerin ve kurumların mevcut ve gelecekteki verimliliğini artırmak, bu sistemin geliştirileceği ve yaygınlaştırılacağı bir ortam geliştirmektir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, son yıllarda önemli bir gündem oluşturan Akıllı Ulaştırma Sistemleri hakkında bilgi aktarmak ve konunun Türkiye açısından önemini vurgulayarak, potansiyel çalışma alanlarına ilgililerin dikkatini çekmektir. Bu kapsamda Akıllı Ulaştırma Sistemine, tarihi gelişim süreci içinde kısaca değinildikten sonra konunun teknik altyapısı üzerinde durulmuştur. Dünyadaki çeşitli uygulamalarla beraber Türkiye'deki durum ortaya konulduktan sonra bazı önerilerde bulunulmuştur. The developments of the Computer Technology also affects transportation sector especially nowadays, the systems based on information called, Intelligent Transportation System are improved. Aims of the Intelligent Transportation Systems are increasing road security in the highway projects, increasing the capacity of highway transportation, increasing the personel ability, adaptation and comfort in the highway transportation, decreasing the negative effects on the environment and energy sources of highway transportation, increasing the efficiency, which is now and in the future, of people and institutions, developing the atmosphere which this system will be improved and became widespread. The aim of this study is to give information about Intelligent Transportation Systems which is an important item to draw attention of authorities to the potential working areas of Intelligent Transportation Systems. In this scope, the historical development and the technical infrastructure of Intelligent Transportation Systems were represented. After giving information about the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems in the world, some proposals were offered about the applications of Intelligent Transportation Systems in Turkey.
