Bu doktora tez çalışmasının ana amacı atık lityum iyon pillerden lityum ve kobalt metallerinin asidik liç ve çöktürme prosesleriyle geri kazanımının araştırılmasıdır. Asidik liç çalışmaları 24 tam faktöriyel dizayn esas alınarak yürütülmüş ve sonuçlar ANOVA (analysis of variance) yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. Proses optimizasyonu için lityum ve kobalt liç verimlerini tahmin etmek üzere ampirik modeller oluşturulmuştur. 24 tam faktöriyel dizayn çalışmasında farklı faktörlerin (pil tozu miktarı, indirgen ajan konsantrasyonu, asit konsantrasyonu, sıcaklık) liç performansı üzerine etkileri belirlenmiştir. Literatürde atık lityum iyon pillerden lityum ve kobalt liçi için indirgeyici ajan olarak hidrojen peroksit kullanılmıştır. Bu tez çalışmasında ise hidrojen peroksitin yanı sıra indirgeyici ajan olarak laktoz, fruktoz, sakroz ve glukoz gibi karbonhidratlar kullanılarak, lityum ve kobalt geri kazanımına etkileri incelenmiştir. Asit olarak sülfürik asit, hidroklorik asit veya nitrik asit ile çalışılmıştır.Çöktürme deneylerinde ise metallerin çökelmesini sağlamak amacıyla sodyum hidroksit veya sodyum karbonat kullanılmıştır. Karışık pil tozu ile yapılan deney sonuçları, toplam pil kütlesinin sırasıyla %3,27 ve 24,39 oranında lityum ve kobalt içerdiğini göstermiştir. Kinetik deneyler sonucunda, H2SO4 ve HNO3 ile birlikte indirgeyici ajan olarak laktoz ve glukoz kullanıldığında, Li ve Co liç verimlerinin diğer indirgen ajanlara kıyasla daha düşük olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu sebeple asidik liç testlerinde söz konusu asitlerle birlikte indirgeyici ajan olarak sakroz, fruktoz ve hidrojen peroksit kullanılmıştır. HCl ile yapılan kinetik testlerde ise hidrojen peroksit dışında kullanılan indirgeyici ajanların Li ve Co liç verimine etkisinin az olması sebebiyle asidik liç testlerinde sadece hidrojen peroksit kullanılmıştır. Asidik liç testleri sonucunda, her iki metalin liç verimlerinin, HCl ile daha yüksek (yaklaşık %100) olduğu tespit edilmiştir. 30 C.ye kıyasla 90 C sıcaklıkta lityum ve kobalt liç verimlerinin her ikisi de artmıştır.Tüm indirgen ajan ve asitlerle, maksimum lityum ve kobalt liç verimlerine ulaşmak için 2 saat liç süresinin yeterli olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Endüstriyel ölçekte HCl kullanılmasının dezavantajları bulunması sebebiyle HCl ile liçe alternatif olarak HNO3 ile birlikte fruktoz veya sakrozun indirgeyici ajan olarak kullanılması önerilebilir. Kobalt, 4M NaOH varlığında pH 8.de tamamen çökelmiştir. Lityum ise kobalt gideriminin ardından pH 11 ve 100 C.de doygun Na2CO3 ilavesinin ardından E oranında çökelmiştir. Deney sonuçlarından lityum ve kobaltın uygulanan yöntemler ile geri kazanılabileceği anlaşılmaktadır. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the recovery of lithium and cobalt from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) using acidic leaching and further precipitation processes. Acidic leaching tests were performed according to 24 full factorial design and the results were evaluated by the ANOVA (analysis of variance) method. Empirical regression models were established to estimate lithium and cobalt leach yields for process optimization. The impacts of different factors (battery powder amount, reducing agent concentration, acid concentration, temperature) on leach performances were determined. In addition to hydrogen peroxide which was already tested in various previous work published in the literature, carbohydrates including lactose, fructose, sacrose, and glucose were also tested in this work as reducing agents during acidic leaching. Their effects on lithium and cobalt leach yields were determined. The tested inorganic acids were sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. In precipitation experiments, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate were used to provide metal precipitation. The characterization results for the mixed battery powders showed that lithium and cobalt contents were about 3.3 and 24.4% of the total powder mass, respectively. According to the kinetic test results, when lactose or glucose were used as a reducing agent with H2SO4 or HNO3, the leaching yields of Li and Co were less than those obtained by other reducing agents. For this reason, sacrose, fructose or hydrogen peroxide were used as reducing agents in subsequent leach tests. About 100% leach yields were found for both lithium and cobalt when hydrogen peroxide and HCl was used together. The leach yields of both lithium and cobalt increased with increasing temperature from 30 to 90 C. A leach duration of about 2 h was found to be sufficient for the leaching equilibrium to be reached for all the reducing agents and acids tested. Since HCl has some disadvantages in full-scale industrial applications, other acids (H2SO4 or HNO3) can be employed along with reductants such as fructose or sacrose. Cobalt was completely precipitated with 4 M NaOH at pH 8. After the recovery of cobalt, the leach liquor was treated with a saturated solution of sodium carbonate to precipitate Li at pH 11 and at 100 C. The results indicated that about 80% of lithium was recovered as a precipitate. The results overall suggested that lithium and cobalt may be effectively recovered from spent LIBs by the employed leaching protocols in this thesis.
