It is important for fabrics to be resistant to the exposed forces. As it is known, exposure to different conditions such as light, friction and cleaning operations reduces the life of fabrics. During handling of textile products, highest level of satisfaction is possible with targeting and acquisition of maximum resistance. Recently, many studies are carried out related to this subject. Studies which focuses especially on boron material are increasing gradually. Lightweight, heat-resistant, semi-conducting boron carbide is known as third hardest material at room temperature and it further hardens at 1100 _ C. It has many unique features such as low density, a short thermal expansion coefficient, high melting temperature, high resistance against chemical attacks, high thermal stability, high thermoelectric power coefficient, a broad cross section for neutron absorption. This superior combination of features ensures the availability of this material in numerous application fields. Boron carbide is used mainly in the production of light weight body bulletproof shield, air-craft protective coverings, solid state neutron detectors and fray resistant materials. In the synthesis of B4C nano structures, usage of carbon source is fundamental. Cotton is nanoporous material and composed of polysaccharide chains between amorphous and crystalline regions. It is the oldest and most widely used material that is used by human beings at least 7000 years. In this study, cotton fabric is planned to be used as both the template and the carbon source to synthesize large quantities of radially aligned B4C nanowires on carbon microfibers. Boron carbide is one of the rare, lightest but most strength compound. For this reason, to gain the specialties of high performance protective cloth, it is planned to use boron carbide in this study.
