Bu tez çalışmasının amacı Tarsus (Mersin) yöresinde odun kömürü yapımında kullanılan ağaç türlerinin tespit edilmesi ve bu belirlenen ağaç türlerinin odun kömürü kalitesi üzerine etkisinin olup olmadığını belirlemek için yapılmıştır. Araştırma alanı seçiminde Mersin Orman Bölge Müdürlüğü sınırları içinde odun kömürü yapımının yoğun olduğu alan (Tarsus-Karabucak) tercih edilmiştir. Seçilen bu alanda iki farklı okaliptüs türünden odun kömürü yapıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Teşhisi yapılan bu farklı okaliptüs türlerinin Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. ve Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Tarsus-Karabucak’ta üretilen yakacak odundan yapılan odun kömürlerinden numuneler alınmıştır.FAO (1985)'ya göre odun kömürünün kalitesi; nem içeriği, uçucu madde oranı, kül içeriği, karbon içeriği, fiziksel özellikleri, adsorbsiyon kapasitesine göre belirlenmektedir.Tarsus Orman İşletme Müdürlüğü sınırları içerisinde odun kömürü yapılan sahalardan alınan örneklerin odun kömürü kalitesini belirlemek için Hacettepe Üniversitesi Fen Fakültesi Kimya Bölümü Laboratuvarında Türk Standartları Enstitüsü tarafından belirlenmiş TS 1987 standardına göre odun kömürü kimyevi analizi yapılmıştır. Analizde odun kömürü kalitesini belirleyen odunun nem içeriği, uçucu madde oranı, kül içeriği, karbon içeriğinin belirlenmesi hedeflenmiştir.Analiz sonuçlarına göre farklı okaliptüs türlerden elde edilen odun kömürünün karbon içeriğinin, rutubet, kül ve uçucu madde miktarlarının farklı olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan kimyevi analizin sonucu odun kömürü yapımında kullanılan türlerin odun kömürü kalitesi üzerine etkisi olduğunu göstermiştir.Tarsus yöresinde odun kömürü yapımında kullanılan ağaç türlerin odun kömürü kaliteleri incelendiğinde odun kömürü kalitelerinin birbirinden çok da farklı olmadığı laboratuvar ortamında yapılan kimyevi analiz sonuçlarından anlaşılmıştır.
