Yüksek sıcaklık süperiletkenlerinin keşfinden bu yana araştırmacıların çoğu bu malzemelere yapılan katkılamaların etkilerini incelemektedirler. Tüm bu çalışmalar yüksek sıcaklık süperiletkenlerinin mekanik, elektriksel ve manyetik özelliklerini geliştirmek ve bunun yanında, teknolojik uygulamalar açısından ilerleme kaydetmek amacıyla yapılmış ve yapılmaktadır. Yüksek sıcaklık süperiletkenleri içerisinde bakır oksitler (kupratlar) en önemli gruptur. BSCCO sistemi üretim ve kullanım kolaylığı açısından ve toksit madde içermemesinden dolayı bakır oksitler arasında yaygın olarak incelenmekte ve bazı teknolojik uygulamalarda kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada bizmut(Bi) temelli yüksek sıcaklık süperiletkenlerine gadolinyum(Gd) elementinin, katıhal reaksiyon metodu ve termal difüzyon yoluyla katkılanması etkileri karşılaştırılarak incelenmiştir. Çalışmamızın 1. bölümünde, Bi1.8Pb0.35Sr1.9Ca2.1Cu3GdxOy süperiletkenine x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 ve 0.5 oranlarında Gd elementi katkısının etkileri incelenmiştir. Tüm numunelerimiz standart katıhal reaksiyon metodu ile hazırlanmıştır. Gd katkısının etkilerini incelemek için X-Işını kırınımı (XRD), taramalı elektron mikroskobu ile görüntüleme (SEM), dc elektriksel direnç, boşluk yoğunluğu, transport kritik akım yoğunluğu ölçümleri ve mekanik özelliklerinin belirlenmesi için ise, Vickers sertlik ölçümleri yapılmıştır. Transport ölçümler süperiletkenlik geçiş sıcaklığının, transport kritik akım yoğunluğunun ve boşluk yoğunluğu değerlerinin aşırı derecede Gd katkısına bağlı olduğunu göstermiştir. Tc ve Jc değerleri Gd katkısı arttıkça azalmıştır. SEM ölçümleri incelendiğinde, Gd katkısı arttıkça yüzey morfolojisi ve numunelerdeki tanecik bağlanmalarının kötüleştiği ve yüksek sıcaklık fazının(Bi-2223) azaldığı, düşük sıcaklık fazının (Bi-2212) ise arttığı görülmüştür. Mekanik ölçümlerinde; Vickers mikrosertliği (Hv), çentik büyüklüğü etkisi (ISE), esneklik modülü (E), akma mukavemeti ve kırılma dayanımı (KIC) gibi büyüklüklerin aşırı derecede Gd katkısına bağlı olduğu görülmüştür. Hv, E, Y ve KIC değerleri Gd katkı oranı arttıkça azalır. Mekanik özellikler ayrıca uygulanan çentik gücüne de bağlıdır. Bunlara ek olarak numunelerimizin doğru sertlik değeri (yükten bağımsız), Young modülü, esneklik modülü, kırılma dayanımı hesaplanmıştır. Gd katkısına bağlı olarak süperiletkenlik ve mekanik özelliklerde gözlemlenen kötüleşme incelenmiştir Çalışmamızın ikinci bölümünde; termal difüzyon yapılarak hazırlanan numunelerde, Gd atomlarının BSCCO örgü yapısı içerisinde bakır atomlarının yerine geçmiş olması olasıdır. Ölçülen tüm karakteristik özelliklerin 800 oC difüzyon tavlama sıcaklığına kadar iyileştiği ve bu tavlama sıcaklığından yüksek değerlere çıkılınca, değerlerin azalmaya başladığı görülmüştür. Çünkü difüzyon tavlama sıcaklığının artmasıyla kristal yapının genişlemesi ve atomlar arası mesafenin açılarak Gd nano parçacıklarının kristal yapı içerisine nüfuz etmesi sağlanır. Bu özelliklerdeki iyileşmeler, büyük oranda difüzyon tavlama sıcaklığı ile saf Bi-2223'ün doğal durumundan optimum dolu seviyeye geçişi ile ilgilidir ve bu durumu Gd nano parçacıklarının kristal yapının içerisine nüfuz etmesi doğrular. Diğer yandan, süperiletkenlik özelliklerindeki bu değişikliğin nedeni polikristal Bi-2223 süperiletken ana yapısındaki yerleşme problemi, gözenekli yapı, kusurlar ve düzensizliklerdir. Ortalama tanecik büyüklükleri, CuO2 katmanlarındaki boşluk yoğunluğunun azalması ve özellikle sistemdeki kristalleşmenin kötüleşmesi bu durumu destekler. Mekanik incelemeler için 0,245-2,940 N arasında çentik gücü uygulanarak yapılan Vickers mikrosertlik ölçümleri sonucunda, Gd difüze edilmiş hacimli süperiletken numunelerin tipik ISE (Çentik büyüklüğü etkisi) davranışı sergilediği tespit edilmiştir. Tavlama sıcaklığının 800 oC'ye artmasıyla esneklik modülü, akma mukavemeti ve kırılma dayanımındaki önemli artış bu ölçümlerdeki en göz alıcı noktadır. In this study we analyzed the effect of the Gd (Gadolinium) addition to the superconducting and mechanical properties by comparing with the Solid State Reaction Method and Thermal Diffusion Method. At first; we have investigated the effect of addition of Gd in Bi1.8Pb0.35Sr1.9Ca2.1Cu3GdxOy superconductor with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The samples were prepared by standard solid-state reaction methods. The investigation consisted of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dc electrical resistivity, hole concentration, transport critical current density measurements and mechanical properties by static Vickers hardness measurements have been carried out to assess the effects of Gd addition. Transport measurements indicated that the superconducting transition temperature, transport critical current density and hole concentration values of the samples strongly depend on the Gd addition. The values of Tc, and Jc of the samples decreased with the increase in Gd addition. When Gd addition ratio was increased, surface morphology and grain connectivity of the samples were observed to degrade from SEM investigations and phase ratio of the high-Tc (Bi-2223) phase to the low-Tc (Bi-2212) phase decreased (XRD measurements). Mechanical measurements indicated that the Vickers hardness (Hv), Young's modulus, yield strength (Y), and fracture toughness (KIC) values of the samples strongly depend on the Gd addition. The values of Hv, E, Y, and KIC of the samples decreased with an increase in the Gd addition. Mechanical properties of the samples are also found to be load dependent. In addition, we have calculated the true (load independent) hardness, Young's modulus, yield strength, and fracture toughness of the samples. The possible reasons for the observed degradation in the superconducting and mechanical properties due to Gd addition were discussed. On the other hand, at the second part of the experiment Gd atoms thermally diffused to the bulk BSCCO samples. Same measurements repeated for the samples. All the measured characteristic properties, being in charge of the applications in the industry, engineering and technology, improve until a certain diffusion annealing temperature of 800 oC beyond which they tend to degrade considerably. The increase in the properties is mostly related to the transition from the inherent overdoped state of the pure Bi-2223 material to optimum doped state with the diffusion annealing temperature, confirming the penetration of the sufficient Gd nanoparticles into the crystal structure. On the other hand, the suppression in the superconducting properties stems from the appearance of the porosity, defects, disorder and localization problem in the polycrystalline Bi-2223 superconducting matrix. This is attributed to the decrement of the average crystallite size and mobile hole concentration in the CuO2 layers and especially the retrogression of the crystallinity in the system. As for the mechanical characteristics, Vickers microhardness measurements exerted in the applied indentation test load range of 0.245–2.940 N indicate that the Gd diffused bulk superconducting samples exhibit the typical indentation size effect behavior. With the enhancement in the annealing temperature up to 800 oC, the significant increase in the elastic modulus, yield strength and fracture toughness is one of the most striking points in the paper. The long and short of it is that the excess diffusion annealing temperature damages the fundamental characteristics of the Bi-2223 system.
