Elektron Paramanyetik Rezonans (EPR) spektroskopisi, farklı türde ortamlarda serbest radikallerin karakteristik özelliklerini ortaya çıkarmak için kullanılan etkili bir metottur. Katı veya sıvı yapılarda var olan yerleşik radikaller üzerinde çalışmak için kullanılan bir araştırma aracı olarak kullanılır. Bu çalışmada, tez konusunun literatürdeki öneminin vurgulanması için literatür özeti verilmiş ve konunun amacı belirtilmiştir. Ek olarak EPR teorisini görsel açıdan tanımlamak için, kısa ömürlü serbest radikallerin saptanmasına yardımcı olarak kullanılan spin tuzaklama ve spin etiketleme yöntemleri genel hatlarıyla izah edilmiştir. Çalışmamız esas olarak iki kısımdan oluşmaktadır. İlk kısımda, benzen ve su çözeltilerinde 5,5-dimetil-1-pirolin-N-oksit (DMPO)’nun bazı radikal ürünlerinin temel optimize yapıları Yoğunluk Fonksiyon Teorisi (DFT/B3LYP, B3PW91 ve PBEPBE) ve Hartree-Fock (HF) metotları ile 6-311++G(d,p) ve LanL2DZ temel setleri kullanılarak hesaplanmıştır. Tuzaklanmış radikaller olarak su da, H, N3, NH2, CH3, CCl3, OOH ve benzen çözeltisinde ise F, OH, CF3, CH2OH, OC2H5 kullanıldı. Tuzaklanan radikallerin hesaplanan izotropik ince yapı çiftlenim sabitlerinin, deneysel veriler ile uygunluğu araştırılmıştır. Nitroksit radikalinin β protonundan kaynaklı aşırı ince yapı çiftlenim sabitinin, nitrojene bağlı oksijen çekirdeğinin zıt spin yoğunluğundan etkilendiği görülmüştür. Elde edilen bütün teorik değerlerden radikaller için ince yapı hesaplamalarında, DFT(B3PW91)/LanL2DZ setindeki hesaplamaların diğer setlere göre deneysel veriler ile daha uyumlu sonuçlar verdiği tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca çalışma, bütün radikal ürünleri için hesaplanmış olan geometrik parametreler, bağlanma enerjileri, atomik spin yoğunlukları ve hiperkonjugatif etkileşim enerjileri ile zenginleştirilmiştir. Çalışmamızın ikinci kısmında ise ilk kısımdan farklı olarak, benzen ve su çözeltilerinde DMPO’nun H, OH, O(CH2)(CH3) ve OC(CH3)3 radikal ürünleri için hesaplanan izotropik ince yapı çiftlenimi sabitleri 6-31G(d,p), LanL2MB ve SDD şeklinde ilave üç temel set ile DFT(B3LYP) ve HF metotları kullanılarak deneysel sonuçlar ile karşılaştırılmıştır. DFT(B3LYP)/LanL2MB temel seti kullanılarak elde edilen hesaplamalarda, teorik ince yapı çiftlenim sabiti sonuçlarının diğer seviyelere göre deneysel veriler ile daha uyumlu olduğu görülmüştür. Electron Paramagnetik Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is a effective method that used to reveal the characteristic properties of free radicals in different types of environments. It has been used as an research tool to study radical structures formed in solid or liquid states. In the thesis, the summary of literature has been given in order to emphasize the significance of the thesis subject. In addition to identfy EPR theory visually, the spin trapping and spin labelling methods were explicated in general terms that used to assist in the detection of short lived free radicals. Our study mainly consists of two part. In the first part, the optimized electronic structures of some radical adducts of 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) in water and benzene solutions have been determined by way of the Density Functional Theory (DFT/B3LYP, B3PW91 and PBEPBE) and Hartree-Fock (HF) methods with 6-311++G(d,p) and LanL2DZ basic sets. As trapped radicals, H, N3, NH2, CH3, CCl3, OOH in water and F, OH, CF3, CH2OH, OC2H5 in benzene solutions were used. The calculated isotropic hyperfine coupling constants of all the trapped radicals have been compared with the corresponding experimental data. The hyperfine coupling constant due to the β proton of nitroxide radical is seen to be effected with the opposite spin density of oxygen nucleus bonded to the nitrogen. From all the calculated data it was concluded that on the hyperfine calculations the DFT(B3PW91)/LanL2DZ level is superior relative to the other levels for these radicals. Also, the study has been enriched by the computational of the geometrical parameters, binding energies, atomic spin densities and hyper conjugative interactions energies for all the radical adducts. In the second part of our work is not much different from the first part. The isotropic hyperfine coupling constants have also been calculated for H, OH, O(CH2)(CH3) and OC(CH3)3 radical products of DMPO in water and benzene solutions by the DFT(B3LYP) and HF methods addition with 6-31G(d,p), LanL2MB and SDD three basic sets and compared with the experimentally results. In the calculations DFT(B3LYP)/LanL2MB basic set was found to be more compatible with the experimental data relative to the other levels of the theoric results.
