Galanin (GAL), dokuya spesifik tarzda eksprese edilen obezitenin yanı sıra lipid ve glukoz anormallikleri gibi yetişkin başlangıçlı hastalıklarda rol oynayan bir nöropeptiddir. Bu çalışmanın amacı erişkinlerde galaninin serum düzeylerini ve obezite ile ilişkisini araştırmaktır. Bu kesitsel çalışma, Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Uyku Bozuklukları Merkezi'ne başvuran kadın ve erkeklerden oluşmaktadır (toplam n=261; n=109 kadın ve n=152 erkek). Vücut kitle indekslerine (VKİ) göre, hastalar dört kategoriye ayrıldı: normal vücut ağırlığı (<24,9 kg/m2), fazla kilolu (25–29,9 kg/m2), obez (30–39,9 kg/m2) ve morbid obez (>40 kg/m2). Deneklerdeki plazma numuneleri, ticari olarak temin edilebilen analitik sistemler kullanılarak her bir plazma parametresi için analiz edildi. Bu çalışmanın sonuçları, her iki cinsiyette de serum GAL düzeylerinin vücut kitle indeksi (VKİ) ile anlamlı derecede pozitif korelasyonlar gösterdi. Morbid obez bireylerde galanin düzeyleri diğer gruplara göre anlamlı olarak daha yüksekti. Serum GAL düzeyleri C-reaktif protein (CRP) ile pozitif korelasyon gösterdi. Bu çalışmada, CRP ile VKİ arasında anlamlı pozitif korelasyon bulunduğunu saptadık. Elde ettiğimiz sonuçlar obez olgularda galaninin uygun olmayan plazma konsantrasyonlarının kilo artışının sonucu olabileceğini veya obezitenin patogenezinde yer alan birçok faktörden biri olabileceğini göstermektedir. Obezite, yüksek CRP seviyeleri ile de ilişkilidir. Obezitenin artmış CRP seviyeleri ile pozitif ilişkileri, CRP düzeylerindeki yükselmeleri önlemek için obeziteyi azaltmanın önemini göstermektedir. Galanin (GAL) is a neuropeptide which that is expressed in a tissue specific manner and has been implicated in adult onset diseases such as obesity and lipid and glucose abnormalities. The objective of this study was to investigate the serum levels of GAL and their relationship with obesity in adults. This cross-sectional study included both men and women (total n=261; n=109 women and n=152 men) who applied to the Sleep Disorder Center of Medicine Faculty of Süleyman Demirel University. According to their body mass index (BMI), subjects were grouped into into four categories: normal body weight (<24.9 kg/m2), overweight (25–29,9 kg/m2), obese group (30–39,9 kg/m2) and morbid obese (>40 kg/m2). Plasma samples from subjects were assayed for each plasma parameter using commercially available analytic systems. The results of this study include that serum GAL levels showed a significantly positive correlation with body mass index (BMI) in both genders. In morbidly obese individuals, galanin levels were significantly higher when compared to other groups. Serum GAL levels were olso positively correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP). In present study, we found that there is a significant positive correlation of BMI with CRP. Our result indicate that inappropriate plasma concentrations of galanin in obese subjets may be a consequence of their weight status, or could be one of many factors involved in the pathogenesis of obesity. Obesity is associated with elevated levels of CRP. The positive associations of obesity with elevated CRP levels suggest the importance of reducing obesity to prevent elevations in CRP levels.
