Son dönemlerde Dünyada meydana gelen sosyo-ekonomik gelişmelere bağlı olarak doğrudan yabancı yatırımların gerek boyutları gerekse yönü önemli değişikliklere uğramıştır. Önceleri sadece gelişmiş ülkelerin önemli bir pay aldığı doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar, bugün gelişmekte olan ülkelere de yönelmektedir. Çalışma son zamanlarda yapılan DYY ve DYY'ların nispeten finans sektöründe yoğunlaşmasının Bankacılık sektörüne etkilerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Türk bankacılık sektörüne yabancı girişi yeni bir olgu olmamakla beraber yabancı bankaların Türk bankacılık sistemi içindeki payı "sınırlı" kalmıştır. 1980 öncesinde ithal ikamesine dayanan, yurtiçi mal ve hizmet üretiminin korunduğu bir ortamda yerli bankalar finans sisteminde baskın bir rol oynarken yabancıların girişi düşük düzeyde gerçekleşmiştir. 1980'den sonra finansal sistemde rekabetin ve etkinliğin artması için uygulanan liberalizasyon politikaları çerçevesinde yabancı banka girişi kolaylaştırılmıştır. Bunun sonucu olarak sisteme daha fazla yabancı girişi olmuştur. Ancak, giriş önündeki engellerin azalmasına rağmen Türkiye'de uzun süreli yüksek enflasyon ve istikrarsızlıklar sebebiyle yabancı bankaların sistem içindeki payı pek fazla değişmemiştir. Nitekim 1990'lı yıllardan itibaren aktif toplamı içinde yabancı bankaların payı yüzde 5'i geçmemiştir. Ancak, 2004 yılından bu yana sektöre olan yabancı ilgisi neticesinde yabancı bankaların sistem içindeki payı yükselmektedir. The dimensions and directions of foreign investments have significantly changed depending on the recent socio-economical developments around the world. Previously made mostly in developed countries, foreign direct investments are today also headed towards developing countries. This study aims to examine the effects of recent FDIs and of their relative increase in the finance sector upon the banking sector. Foreign entrance into Turkish banking sector is not a new notion. However, the position of foreign investment banks in Turkish banking system can be defined as "limited". Before 1980, in an import substitution based environment preserving the production of domestic assets and service, national banks had a dominant role in the finance system whereas the foreign entrance was at a nominal level. After 1980, within the framework of liberalization policies which were carried out to increase the efficiency and competition, the entrance of foreign investment banks was facilitated. This situation resulted in more foreign entrance to the system. However, despite alleviation of the difficulties related to the foreign entrance, the portion of foreign investment banks in the system hasn't changed much due to the long-term high inflation and instability in Turkey. As a matter of fact, the portion of foreign investment banks hasn't exceeded 5% among the sum of active investments since the nineties. However, due to the growing foreign interest in the sector since 2004, the portion of foreign investment banks in the system has been increasing.
