Hatay’da yerel basın faaliyetleri, özellikle 1918 sonrası yaşanan tarihsel sürecin zorunlu bir sonucu olarak ortaya çıkmış ve gelişmiştir. Nitekim Hatay’ın 30 Ağustos 1918 tarihli Mondros Ateşkes Antlaşması sonrası, Fransız işgali sonrası bir manda yönetimi altına alınmasıyla başlayan yeni dönemde, aydınların özellikle 1928 yılı itibarıyla basın yayın yoluyla teşkilatlandığı görülmektedir. Bölgede işgal ve manda idaresinin gerçekleştirdiği yeni uygulamalar ve bu uygulamaların yarattığı sonuçlar yerel ölçekte bir basın faaliyetine olan ihtiyacı ortaya çıkarmıştır. Dolayısıyla Hatay’da basın, işgalin ve manda idaresi uygulamalarının zorunlu bir sonucu olarak oluşmuş ve gelişmiştir. Bu basın, yerel ölçekte halkın yaşanan olaylardan haberdar edilmesi ve Sancak’la ilgili önemli konularda bilinçlendirilmesinin yanı sıra bağımsızlık istencinin geliştirilmesi ve mücadele ruhunun güçlendirilmesinin sağlanması gibi önemli görevler üstlenmiştir. 1936’da Fransa’nın Suriye’ye bağımsızlık vereceğini söylemesi üzerine taraflar arasında gerginleşen siyasal ilişkiler Türkiye’nin Hatay meselesine yönelik tavrını dış ve iç basında açığa çıkarmasına olanak sağlamıştır. Türkiye ve Atatürk’ün Hatay’ın bağımsızlık konusuna göstermiş oldukları ilgi Suriye ve Fransa kamuoyunda tepkilere yol açınca söz konusu olan durum Milletler Cemiyeti’ne ulaştırılmıştır. Tüm siyasal baskılara rağmen Sancak halkının çoğunluğunu oluşturan Türklerin, Türkiye’nin desteği ile basın üzerinden yürüttükleri fikir mücadeleleri Hatay’ın bağımsızlık ve Türkiye’ye iltihak yolunda atılmış önemli adımlar olmuştur. Bu süreçte basın “Milli” ve “Muhalif” kanat olmak üzere iki kutba bölünmüştür. Milli kanat, Türkiye’nin desteği ile Sancak halkının teşkilatlanmasını sağlarken, muhalif kanat ise, başta Suriye Hükümeti olmak üzere, Manda idaresi yani Fransa’nın desteğini görmüştür. Basın, Türkiye, Fransa ve Suriye odaklı Hatay’ın bağımsızlık ve iltihak mücadelelerine yönelik “üç tarz-ı siyasetin” yansıtılmasında en önemli araç olmuştur. Kısa sürede yerel basın, her iki cephede birbirlerine karşı yürüttükleri farklılaşan yayın politikalarıyla, entelektüel bir kadro hareketine dönüşmüştür. Hatay’ın entelektüel fikir insanları, söz konusu bu entelektüel kadro hareketi içerisinde basının olanak verdiği ölçüde bu meseleleri ele alan önemli haberleriyle sürecin yürütücü kuvvetleri oldukları gibi Hatay’ın sosyo-kültürel, siyasi ve idari yapısı hakkında da önemli bilgiler sağlamışlardır. Bu kadro hareketinin milli kanatta öne çıkan isimleri arasında Vedi Münir, Şükrü Balcı, Selim Çelenk, A.Sırrı Hocaoğlu, A.Faik Türkmen bulunmaktadır. Buna karşın muhalif kanatta ise Edvard Nun, Firuz Hanzat gibi isimler öne çıkmıştır. Fransa manda idaresi, Hatay’daki milli gazetelere, kendi yönetimine muhalif yayınlara karşı sansür uygulamıştır. Fransa, gazetelerde milliyetçilik duygularının aşılanmasına fırsat vermemiştir. Böylece gazeteler denetim altına alınmıştır. Gazete neşri için ruhsatları sınırlandırılıp, izin verilmemeye çalışılmıştır. Birçok gazete kapatılıp, yazarları tutuklanmıştır. Hatay’da 1930’lu yıllardan itibaren belirgin bir biçimde Türk dilinin ve Türkçe yayınların ağırlığı hissedilmiştir. Bu gazeteler bağımsızlık mücadelesini yürüten yazılarıyla Türkiye’ye iltihaka kadar entelektüel bir yazın mücadelesi vermiş ve Fransız mandası ile uğraşmışlardır. Basında en çok ele alınan konuları iki dönemde incelenebilmektedir. Bunlardan ilki 1921 ile 1936 yılları arasıdır. Diğeri ise 1936 ve 1939 yılları arasıdır. Birinci dönemde daha çok sosyal ve kültürel temalar yer alırken ikinci dönemde siyasal meselelere öncelik verilmiştir. Basın bu dönemde özellikle Sancak meselesi, bağımsızlık konusu, bayrak meselesi, vatandaşlık konusu, Türkiye’ye iltihak gibi siyasal konulara ağırlık vererek bu açıdan halkın bilinçlenmesini sağlamayı hedeflemiştir. Bu yolla basın, Hatay davasının yerel ölçekte belirleyici gücü olmuştur ve Hatay’ın kaderini tespit etmekte önemli roller üstlenmiştir. Hatay entelektüel kadrosunun basın üzerinden yürüttükleri çabalar uzun vadede başarıyla sonuçlanarak Hatay’ın bağımsızlığı ve Türkiye’ye iltihakına önemli katkı sağlamıştır. Bu çalışma ile Hatay’ın önce bağımsızlık daha sonra Türkiye’ye iltihak mücadelelerinde önemli bir yere sahip olan, siyasal çabaların yanı sıra süreci doğrudan etkilemiş, yerel ölçekte basın üzerinden yürütülen entelektüel çaba ve girişimler tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışma, ayrıca bu entelektüel çaba ve faaliyetlerin bir kadro hareketi biçiminde planlı bir şekilde yürütüldüğünü vurgulayarak, basının Hatay'ın entelektüel birikiminin önemli bir taşıyıcısı olduğunu ortaya koymayı amaçlamıştır. Ayrıca basının Hatay’ın sosyo-kültürel yapısına yaklaşımı ve siyasal meselelere karşı tavrı ortaya konularak, bu açıdan toplum üzerindeki etkisi ve rolü değerlendirilmiştir.
