Türk Medeniyetinin binlerce yıllık bir geçmişinin olması ve geniş bir coğrafyaya yayılmasının da etkisiyle süsleme ve süsleme malzemeleri çok çeşitlilik göstermiştir. Yazının bulunmasıyla ortaya çıkan kitap sanatı, yıllar geçtikçe büyük bir gelişme göstermiş, yazma eserler, yazan kişinin sanat eseri olarak görülmüş, insanda hayranlık uyandıran süslemelere çok fazla yer verilmiştir.Osmanlı Devletine matbaa girmeden önce yazma eserlerde en güzel süslemelerin yapıldığı yerler; cildi, zahriye ve serlevha sayfaları olmuştur. Bu gelenek matbu kitapların bazılarında da sürdürülmek istenmiş ve yazma eserlerden esinlenerek basılan süslemeler sonradan renklendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.Günümüze ulaşan matbu eserler bugün özensiz bir şekilde kütüphanelerde muhafaza edilmektedir. Bu eserler bazı kütüphanelerin depolarında toz içinde ve böcekler tarafından yenilmiş olarak saklanırken, bazılarında ise okuyucuya ödünç olarak verilebilmektedir.18. yüzyıla ait 33 eser bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan sadece 19’una ulaşılmıştır. Fakat bazılarının birkaç kopyasına/baskılarına da ulaşıldığı ve bazı eserler 2 veya daha fazla ciltten oluştuğu için toplam 30 farklı baskı kitap sanatları bakımından incelenmiştir.
