Yaşlılık statüsü, rolü geleneksel toplumlarda, bireyler üzerinden, toplumsal çevrenin atfettiği özellikleri içermektedir. Yaşlılık statüsü, toplumsal tanıma uygun düşen bireyler açısından aynı özellikleri barındırmaktadır. Günümüzün toplumsal yaşamında birçok toplumsal değişkenin etkisiyle anlam kazanmaktadır. Modern toplumlarda, geleneksel toplumun yaşlılık statüsüne atfettiği özellikler, toplumsal referans ihtiyacını karşılayan değer hükmü olarak korunmaktadır. Ancak farklı husus günlük pratiklerde ortaya çıkan değişmelerle ilgilidir. Bu farklılık, geleneksellik içinde herkes için aynı olan bireysel özelliklerin niteliğinin değişmesi ve çeşitlenmiş olmasıyla ilgilidir. Modern toplumlarda, kazanılmış statülerde olduğu gibi bireyin, temsil ettiği statüye, bireysel beceri/başarıyla yaptığı katkı, statünün toplumsal önemini, kendisini temsil eden bireyin niteliklerine bağlı hale getirmektedir. Bu nedenle modern toplumlarda geleneksel toplumlardaki gibi tek bir yaşlılık statüsü değil birçok yaşlılık statüsü bulunmaktadır. Biyolojik olarak yaşlı kabul edilen bireylerin statüsel farklılığı, niteliklerine bağlı olarak oluşturduğu rol potansiyelinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Bireyin rol potansiyeli kendisine, işgal ettiği statüye atfedilen toplumsal önemi ve saygınlığı belirlemektedir. Bu nedenle günümüz toplumlarında, geleneksel toplumlardaki gibi tek bir "yaşlılık statüsü" yoktur. Bireysel ve çevresel nedenlerin etkisiyle "yaşlılık statüleri" bulunmaktadır. Konunun toplumsal bir sorun alanı olması ise bu noktada başlamaktadır.Modern toplumlarda, yaşlılık statüsünün sorunsallığı kurumsal tanımlama ve düzenlemelerle istikrara ve çözüme kavuşturulmuştur. Türkiye gibi geleneksel özelliklerle modern özellikleri birlikte yaşamaya devam eden "geçiş" toplumlarında kurumsal tanımlama ve düzenleme eksiklikleri nedeniyle yaşlılık statüsü sorunsal alan olarak önemini korumaktadır.Eldeki çalışma bu düşüncelerden hareketle "yaşlılık statüsünün" toplumumuzdaki önemini, anlamını, işlevlerini ve konuyla ilgili sorunları tespit ve analiz etmeye çalışmaktadır. Çalışma öncelikle mevcut durumu betimlemeyerek, problematik alanları tespit etmektedir. Daha sonra tespit edilen bu sorunların nedenselliklerini ortaya koymaya çalışmaktadır. In traditional societies, old age status, roles consisted of features attributed by social environment via individuals on specific age. Old age status holds the same features for almost all individuals who are suitable for social definition. In today's social life, it makes sense by the effects of social changes. In modern societies, features attributed by traditional society to old age status have been protected as a value province satisfying social reference needs. But the different point is related to the changes occurring in daily practices. This difference is related to the variety and changes of individualistic features quality which are same for everybody on specific age in traditionality. In modern societies, as in achieved status, the contribution of an individual to the status which he represents by individual ability and success makes dependent it to the features of individual who represents itself. Accordingly in modern societies, there are many old age positions different from the conventional societies which have only one status. Status difference of an individual who is considered as an old person biologically is based on role potentials created according to the qualities.Role potential of an individual defines social importance and respect which were attributed to him and his status in which he is. So in today's societies, there is not only one aging status as in conventional societies. On the contrary, there are aging positions which make sense by the individual and environmental reasons. Being a social problem of the matter starts at this point.In modern societies , problems occurred because of aging status have been gained a solution and stability with institutional definion and arrangements. Again within this period, in' transitional' societies which have been living with traditional and modern features together like Turkey, the aging status maintains its importance as problematical area because of deficiencies of institutional definition and regulation.From, these points view, this study tries to determine and analyse the importance, meaning, functions and problems about the topic of 'aging status' in our society. First of all, the study determines problematic areas by describing current situation. And then it tries to present the causalities of problems determined.
