Hadisler ilk dönemlerde daha çok şifâhî olarak rivâyet edilmiştir. Bu yöntem o dönem için en güvenilir yöntem olarak kabul görmüştür. Çünkü genelde kabul gören anlayışa göre hadisler, adâlet ve zabt sahibi olan kimselerin yine adâlet sahibi kişilerden dinleme ve ezberlemesiyle nakledilmiştir. Bu da rivâyet şekilleri olan semâ’ ve kırâat metodları ile gerçekleşmiştir. Yöntem sağlamlığı sebebiyle ileriki asırlarda da devam ettirilmiştir.Araştırma, Giriş kısmı ve üç bölümden oluşmaktadır.Hadislerin niçin şifâhî olarak rivayet edildiğinin anlaşılması açısından sözlü kültür ve yazılı kültür açıklanmış ve farklı yönleri karşılaştırılmıştır. “Hadis hâfızı” terimi özet olarak izah edilmiştir.Dini metinlerin rivâyet şekillerinin incelendiği ilk bölümde, kutsal metinlerin ve kitapların tarihi seyri içinde nasıl intikal ettirildikleri incelenmiştir. Araplardaki yazılı ve sözlü kültür izah edildikten sonra Kur’ân ve Hadislerin rivâyet metodları incelenmiş gerekli olan terimler de açıklanmıştır.İkinci olarak hadislerin şifâhi rivâyetinin önemine, güvenilirliğine ve sebeplerine değinilmiştir. Şifâhi rivâyet yönteminin tercih edilen rivâyet metodu olması ve bunun gerekliliği örneklerle izah edilmiştir. Hadislerin kitabeti de konuyla ilgisinden dolayı şifâhî rivâyet açısından incelenmiştir. Hadislerin şifâhî rivâyeti işlenirken sırasıyla Hz. Peygamber’in (s.a.) uygulamaları, sahabe, tâbiîn ve daha sonraki dönemler olarak dört bölümde ele alınmıştır. Hadislerin şifâhî rivâyet şekilleri izah edilmiştir.Son bölümde hadis ilmindeki yüksek mertebedeki kişilere verilen “hâfız” ünvânından başlayarak hadis ilminde hâfızın anlamı, ilgili terimlerle beraber hadis hafızlığı konusu ele alınmıştır. Hadis hâfızlığının oluşma süreci, târihi seyri ve hâfızlara verilen rütbelerin isimleri de tanıtılmıştır. Hadis hâfızlarının ezberlediği söylenen yüzbinlerce hadis ve bunun nasıl olabileceği de açıklanmıştır. Hâfızların hayatlarını inceleyen Tabakâtu’l-Huffâz eserleri tanıtılmıştır. Hadiths were narrated as much orally in the first period. This method has been accepted as the most reliable way for that period. According to the generally accepted approach, hadiths were narrated by righteous person through listening to them from the people who are also righteous and in a way of memorizing them. They used the oral narration methods such as “semâ” and “kırâat”. By the way of “semâ” and “kırâat” they listened to and recited the hadiths in order to memorize. Since these methods are robust, they were also used in later centuries.This research consists of an introduction and following three parts.The verbal and written cultures are described and compared with various aspects to be able to understand why hadiths were orally narrated. The term of “Hadith scholar/Hadith hafiz” are briefly explained.In the first section of this research, the way of narration in the course of the history of sacred texts and books is examined. Following the explanation of oral and written culture in Arabs the methods of narration for the Qur'an and the Hadith are examined and the necessary terms are described.In the second section, the importance, reliability and the justification of the tradition of oral narration is emphasized. By giving some examples it is explained the necessity of oral narration as the preferred narration method. Because of is relevance to the topic, the literary composition of hadith is examined from the perspective of oral narration. During the processing of oral narration of hadith, the narrations are presented as the four parts in order of the Sunna of Hz. Prophet Mohammed (s.a.), his companions, followers of the companions, and subsequent periods. The form of oral narration is also explained in this section.In the last section, starting with degree of "hafiz" given to people in the highest order of knowledge of hadith, its meaning, and the related terms are handled. Besides, the process of memorizing of the hadith, its historical background, and the names of the degrees given to the hadith scholars are introduced. It is also explained how hadith scholars have memorized hundred of thousands hadith. The works called “Tabakâtu’l-Huffâz” that examines the life of hadith scholars are introduced. Finally, it is dwelled on to understand how this tradition have survived until the twentieth century.
