Bu çalışma, 1923-1960 yılları arasındaki Türk romanındaki mitik unsurları belirlemeyi konu edinmektedir. Çalışmada mitin tanımını, kökenini, işlevini, yapısını ve edebiyatla olan ilişkisini belirlemek; mitleri sınıflandırmak; 1923-1960 yılları arası Türk romanının kaynağında hangi mitolojik birikimin bulunduğunu ve ele alınan romanlarda mitin nasıl yer aldığını ortaya koymak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde mitin tanımı, kökeni, işlevi ve mitlerin sınıflandırılması yer almaktadır. Mitin tanımı yapılırken öncelikle sözlüklerdeki tanımlara başvurulmuş, farklı ekollerin görüşlerine de değinilerek miti tanımlama çabası içinde olunmuştur. Bu sırada miti tanımlamanın ne kadar güç olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Çünkü mitler sadece bilim ve sanat alanlarında değil yaşamın da içinde bulunmaktadır ve bir işleve sahiptir. Mitlerin kökeninde korku, kaygı gibi duyguların yer aldığı ve bu duyguların insan zihninin süreçlerinden geçerek mitoslara, ritüellere ve edebiyata sembolik bir dil olarak yansıdığı görülmüştür. Doğa olaylarından korkan, başına ne geleceğinden kaygı duyan ilkel insan bilme isteğine kapılarak mitoslar uydurmuştur. Olaylara, varlıklara ve nesnelere kutsal özellikler yüklemiş, arketipleri oluşturmuştur. Böylece korkularından, kaygılarından uzaklaşma imkânı yakalamıştır. İlkel insanın bu ögelere kutsal özellikler yüklemesi inanışlarla ilgilidir. Bu sebeple çalışmada mitin inanış ve inançlarla olan ilişkisine de değinilmiştir. Erken dönem insan, ritüellerle kendi hayatını, eylemlerini düzenlemiş, böylece mitlerin devamlılığını sağlamıştır. Mitler hayatı düzenleme işlevinin yanı sıra farklı medeniyetlerin sanatlarında da önemli bir işleve sahip olmuştur. Giriş bölümünün son kısmını mitlerin sınıflandırılması oluşturmaktadır. Mitler; kozmogonik, teogonik, eskatolojik, antropogonik, kahramanlık ve ritüel mitleri olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde mitin yapısı belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Mitin yapısı ortaya konulurken mit ve gerçeklik sorununa değinilmiş; mitlerin gerçeklikle ilişkiler ağı farklı görüşlere yer verilerek ele alınmıştır. Bunun yanında mit ve bilincin süreçleri kısmı; mit ve arketip, mit ve sembolik dil, mit ve düşler olmak üzere alt başlıklara ayrılmıştır. Bu başlıklarda insan zihninin hangi süreçlerden geçtiği, nasıl bir sembolik dil ve arketip oluşturduğu belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Birinci bölümde kişisel mit kavramına yer verilmiş, bunun yanında mitin kültürlenme sürecinde nasıl bir işleve sahip olduğu ortaya konulmuştur. Son olarak mitin zaman ve mekânla olan ilişkisinden söz edilmiştir. İkinci bölümde mitin edebiyatla olan ilişkisi yer almaktadır. Öncelikle mitin erken dönem anlatı türleriyle olan ilişkisi verilmiş olup miti destan, masal ve efsaneden yapısal olarak ayıran yönler ele alınmıştır. Mitosla dilin ilişkisi İmge, Sembol ve İzlekler başlığı altında incelenmiştir. Dilin vazgeçilmezi olan mecazların alt yapısında mitik bilincin yer aldığı görülmüştür. Bu mitik bilinç edebiyatta imge, sembol ve izlekleri oluşturmuştur. Böylece mitik bilincin modern edebiyata ya da başka bir deyişle edebiyatta nasıl dönüştüğü sorgulanarak bu konu hakkında çeşitli görüşlerden faydalanılmıştır. Mitos, epos ve modern edebiyata doğru ilerleyen süreç hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde 1923-1960 yılları arasındaki Türk romanında hangi mit türlerinin yer aldığı, romanların hangi mitik unsurlara sahip olduğu belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu yıllar arasında yayımlanan yirmi üç romanda mitik ögelere rastlanmıştır. Bu mitik ögelerde kozmogoni, eskatoloji, kahramanlık, ritüel mitoslarından izler saptanmıştır. Bunun dışında Türk romanında karşılaşılan mitik unsurlar arasında tanrılar/tanrıçalar, mitolojik kahramanlar, mitolojik varlıklar ve mitin şamanizmle kesişen yönleri maddeler hâlinde verilmiştir. Romanlarda karşılaşılan mitik unsurların kullanımında derin yapı ve yüzey yapı olmak üzere iki boyut olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Yüzey yapıya yansıyan mit görünümü, benzetme ya da betimleme ögesi biçiminde görülürken derin yapıda doğrudan ya da kapalı göndermelerle mitik süreklilik sağlanmıştır. Buna bağlı olarak yazarların eserin dünyasında mitik unsurlara bilinçli olarak yer verip vermediği tartışılmıştır. This study focuses on defining the mythic elements in Turkish novels between 1923 and 1960. It aims to identify the definition, the origin, the function, the structure of myths and to detect the relation between myths and literature. The study also intends to classify the myths, to reveal the mythological units that lie under the source of Turkish novels and to show the way that myths are used in selected novels. The study is composed of three sections. The introduction section is devoted to the definition, the origin, the function and the classification of myths. The definitions of dictionaries were used in order to define "myths". Additionally, different opinions of scholars were mentioned during the quest of the adefinition. During this study the difficulty of defining myths has been also realized since myths do not only exist in scientific areas or arts but also are a part of life and have functions. It is observed that myths are originated from emotions such as fear or worry and these emotions turn into mythoi, rituals and a symbolical language in literature after being processed by the human mind. The primitive human, who was afraid of natural incidences and who constantly worried about what was going to happen to him next, was captivated by the desire to know and therefore he started to fictionalize mythoi. He attributed holy features to incidences, beings and objects and constructed archetypes. Thus he created an opportunity to escape from his fears and worries. The attribution of holy features that primitive human made were related with beliefs. For this reason the relation between myths and faiths and beliefs is also analyzed in this study. Primitive human organized his life and his actions with rituals and therefore contributed to the lastingness of myths. In addition, to its life organizing function, myths had also an important role in the arts of different civilizations. The end of the introduction section is designated to the classification of myths. The classification is as follows: cosmogonic, theogonical, eschatological, anthropogenic, heroic and ritual myths. In the first section of this study, the structure of myths was attempted to be established. During this phase the duality of myth and reality was mentioned and the web of relations between myths and reality was discussed by referring to different opinions. The section is divided into subsections such as myth and the phases of consciousness, myth and archetypes, myth and symbolical languages, myth and dreams. The processes that human mind goes through, the type of symbolical languages and archetypes created are elaborated under these subsections. The concept of personal myth and the function of the myth in the cultivation process have been analyzed in the first section. Eventually, the relation between myths and time and space has been explained. The second section focuses on the relation between myth and literature. First, the connection between myths and narrations of early periods has been analyzed before explaining the structural differences among myths, sagas, legends and fairy tales. The relation between mythos and language has been illuminated under the title of "Images, Symbols and Themes". It is observed that there is mythic consciousness underneath the metaphors which are the irreplaceable elements of a language. This mythic consciousness has created the images, symbols and themes in literature. Thereby the transformation of mythic consciousness into or in other words within the modern literature has been pondered with the help of several opinions on this subject. Information about the course of respectively mythos, epos and modern literature has been given. The third section encompasses the types of myths existing in the period between 1923 and 1960 and the types of mythic elements that the novels possessed. Mythic elements have been detected in twenty two novels written in this period. Traces of cosmogonic, eschatological, heroic and ritual mythoi have been observed in these mythic elements. Apart from these findings, other mythic elements encountered in Turkish novel such as gods/goddesses, mythological heroes and creatures as well as the common features of myths and shamanism have been listed. It is realized that the usage of mythic elements in the novels are separated into two dimensions such as deep structure and surface structure. The surface structure of a myth is seen as analogies and descriptions while the deep structure provides continuity with direct or indirect references. In correlation with this issue, whether the author has consciously included mythic elements in the context of his work has been discussed.
