Melik Âdil'in hayatı ve siyasî faaliyetleri ele alınmıştır. XII. yüzyılın ortalarına doğru dünyaya gelen Melik Âdil, babasının Zengî ailesinin hizmetinde bulunması hasebiyle o da ağabeyi Salâhaddîn gibi Zengîlerin himayesinde ve gözetiminde yetişmiştir. Amcası Şîrkûh ve ağabeyi Salâhaddîn ile birlikte üçüncü Mısır seferine katılmış, 1174 tarihinden itibaren de Mısır'ı yönetmeye başlamıştır. Bir taraftan Fâtimî taraftarlarının isyanlarını bastırırken diğer taraftan da Haçlıların Mısır'a yönelik tehditlerini boşa çıkarmak için gerekli önlemleri almıştır. Ayrıca Sultan Salahaddîn ile birlikte bölgede Haçlıların elindeki birçok yerin tekrar Müslümanların eline geçmesinde büyük gayretler sarfetmiştir. Yine Haçlılarla yapılan barış müzakerelerinde de ön plandaydı. Sultan Salâhaddîn'in vefatından sonra oğulları arasında yaklaşık dokuz yıl boyunca iktidar mücadeleleri eksik olmadı. Başta tarafsız kalıp hakem rolü üstlenen I. Melik Âdil, bir süre sonra bu aile içi mücadelelerin ülkenin varlığını tehlikeye soktuğunu görünce duruma müdahil oldu. Nihayet 598/1202'de bütün yeğenlerini bertaraf etmeyi başararak ve yine onların hepsinden bağlılık alarak sultanlık makamına oturdu. Böylece ülkede yeniden siyasî birlik sağlandı. Melik Âdil'in iktidarı dönemi boyunca ülke sürekli Batı Haçlılarının tehdidi altında olduğu için o güne kadar yayılmacı bir politika izleyen Melik Âdil, bu dönemde hem ülke içinde hem de ülke dışında barışı tesis etmek için gayret sarf etmiştir. Advisor: Prof. Dr. Murat SARICIK This work has dealt with the life and political activities of Malik al-'Adil I (d.1218) who had a great role in both founding and the rapid rise of the Ayyubid Dynasty. Malik al-'Adil was born in the middle of the 12th century and because his father served under the Zangid Dynasty, like his elderly brother Saladin, he grew up under the protection and auspice of the Zangids. In the company of his paternal uncle Shīrkūh and his elder brother Saladin, he participated in the third military campaign in Egypt, which he later governed in the year 1174. In contrast while he suppressed the riots of the Fatimid supporters, he took precautions to counter the threats of the Crusades in Egypt. Additionally along with Sultan Saladin, he undertook tremendous efforts to regain much of the territory in the locality which the Crusaders had acquired through military conquest. He was also in the forefront during times of reconciliation negotiations with the Crusaders. There was constant power struggles between the sons of Sultan Saladin during the nine years after his demise. At the beginning, Malik al-'Adil was impartial and undertook the role of mediator between them. Then after a period of time observing the intra-familial contestations jeopardizing the presence of the Dynasty, he undertook a power intervention. The end course was that he succeeded to eliminate all of the influence his nephews had and then he acquired allegiance from them and ascended to the throne in 598/1202. Thus political unity was constituted again in the Dynasty. Malik al-'Adil, during the period of his rule in his fief al-Jazirat he followed expansionist policies. However, because the dynasty was always under the threat and shadow of the Crusaders he became the Sultan, he changed his expansionist policies and he exerted to establish peace both in and out of the Dynasty.
