Edebi tarih boyunca kadınlar her zaman bir eş, bir sevgili ve en önemlisi bir anne olarak yansıtılmışlardır. Tarih boyunca kadınlar evdeki melek veya çatıdaki deli kadın olarak tanıtılmışlardır. Bununla beraberi Lacan kadınları bu klişe terimlerden uzaklaştırmış ve kadını çocuğunun ilk diğer kişisi olarak tanıtmıştır. Maya Angelou'nun iki otobiyografik romanı Kafesteki Kuşun Neden Öttüğünü Biliyorum ve Annem & ben & Annem' de de görüldüğü üzere, Angelou, anneyi örneklik kutsal bir figür klişeliğinden dünyevi normal bir varlık figürüne dönüştürmüştür. Annesinden ayrılan Angelou, annelerin çocuklarının ihtiyaçlarını her zaman karşılayacak yapıda olmadığını bilir. Anneden yoksun olarak büyüyen Angelou ırkçı, cinsel ve aşağılayıcı muamelelere maruz kalmıştır. Geleneksel vekil anne olan babaannesi hariç onu yönlendirecek bir annesi olmayan Angelou, bu muamelelerle başa çıkamaz. Fakat Angelou, gençlik yıllarında annesiyle tekrar birleşince annesine karşı beslediği kızgınlığı ortadan kaybolmaktadır ve herhangi aşağılayıcı duruma maruz kaldığında bununla başa çıkabilmektedir. Çocuğun psikolojik gelişimindeki teorisini tanımlarken Lacan üç önemli kavram kullanır; bunlar, ihtiyaç, talep ve arzudur. Bu üç kavram çocuğun dilsel gelişimiyle de bağdaşmaktadır ve Lacan bu evreyi üçe ayırır: Gerçek, İmgesel ve Simgesel Evreleri. Lacancı psikanaliz gözüyle bakılarak, anneden ayrı olan dışlanmış siyahi bir kız çocuğunun bastırılmış duygularını tartışmak amacı güdülerek Angelou'nun çocukluk, gençlik ve yetişkin yılları araştırılmıştır. Bu kavramlara detaylı bir yaklaşımdan sonra, anne eksikliğinin Afro-Amerikan bir kız için çok daha zor olduğu açıkça ortaya konmaktadır. Women have always been a wife, a lover and the most importantly a mother. Especially in literary history, women have been defined as whether an "angel in the house" or a "mad woman in the attic". Nonetheless, Lacan stripped women away from these stereotypes and defined her as a mother who is the first other for the child and also who is the key figure in the formation of the ego, "I". In his theory on the psychological development of the infant, Lacan uses three essential concepts; the need, demand and desire. These three concepts comply with the linguistic development of a child, which Lacan divides into three stages; the Real, the Imaginary and the Symbolic. Based on Maya Angelou's two autobiographies I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and Mom & Me & Mom, the aim of this study is, through the lens of Lacanian psychoanalysis, to analyze Angelou's childhood, teenage and adult years for the purpose to discuss the depressed feelings of a discriminated black female child away from the mother. After a close reading of Lacanian concepts, it is quite clear that the lack of a mother is formidable for an Afro-American girl. Just like Lacan, Maya has transformed the idea of a stereotyped mother as an exemplary holy figure to an earthly normal being. Being separated from her real mother at an early age, Angelou is aware of the fact that mothers cannot at all times meet the needs of their children. Growing up in the absence of a real mother, Angelou is exposed to racism, sexual harassment and humiliation. Maya, in her identity formation process most of the time lacks the mother figure, and this creates aggressiveness in Maya. However, when reunited with her real mother, Angelou's aggressiveness towards her mother is wiped away. The aim of this thesis is to examine the idea of Lacanian m/other in Maya Angelou's two autobiographies I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and Mom & Me & Mom.
