Bir kenti diğer kentlerden ayıran bütün özellikler o kentin kimliği olarak değerlendirilir. Kimlik kavramının toplum bilimler için sorunlu olan doğası, kent söz konusu olduğunda ortadan kalkmamaktadır. Aksine daha karmaşık, daha açıklanmaya muhtaç olan kavramlar ve kuramsal yaklaşımlarla, kimliğin kent üzerinden açıklamasının da yapılması için çaba harcanmaktadır. Kent kimliği, bir olgu olarak, köklerini tarihsel birikimden alan ve süreç içinde evrimleşen, değişen, dönüşen, müdahalelere açık bir kavramdır. Bir kenti kimliği üzerinden anlamaya çalışmak gerçekte o kenti bütün yönleriyle anlamayı gerektirmektedir. Bu çalışmanın temel konusu Hatay özelinde kentsel kimlik sürecine hâkim olan kırılma noktalarını ortaya koyarak, bu kırılma noktaları üzerinden kent aktörlerinin Hatay kent kimliği algılarının ne olduğunu betimlemektir. Bir kentin "ne" olduğu kadar, "nasıl" algılandığı o kentin kimliği açısından son derece önemlidir. Çalışmanın amacı, kent kimliğinin değişiminde Hatay'da yaşanan süreci ortaya koymak ve yaşanan bu değişim ve dönüşümün hangi aktörler ve dinamiklerin etkisi altında, ne şekilde ve nasıl gerçekleştiği sorusunu çeşitli kavramsal ve kuramsal yaklaşımlar aracılığıyla cevaplamaya çalışmaktır. Çalışmanın temel tezi, yeni liberal süreçlerin kenti kuşatan, onu kimliksizleştiren, tektipleştiren yapısının, kentsel kimliğin tarihsel, siyasal ve güncel belirleyicileri ile Hatay kent kimliğini nasıl dönüştürdüğüdür. Çalışmanın bulguları Hatay kent kimliğinin hızla aşındığını, tarihsel kimlik ögelerinin önemini yitirirken, güncel siyasal belirleyicilerin kentsel kimliğe bir müdahale aracı olarak öne çıktığını göstermektedir. Kenti diğer kentlerden farklı kılan ögelerini Hatay yitirmeye başlamıştır. Hoşgörü kavramı Hatay kentini diğer kentler açısından öne çıkaran önemli bir kavram iken, bugün "hoşgörü"den "tahammül"e geçişin yaşandığı görülmekte, kültürlerarası etkileşim ve iletişim kanalları tahrip olmaktadır. Pazar kaygılı yeni kentler inşa etme düşüncesi ve var olan kentleri söz konusu pazara açma çabaları kentleri, ekonomik ve sosyal bir "ürüne" dönüştürmektedir. Farklılıklar üzerine inşa olmuş kentsel kimlik, giderek, farklılıkların pazarlanabildiği ölçüde değer gördüğü yeni bir kentsel kimliğe dönüşmektedir. All the attributes differentiating a city from others are evaluated as its own urban identity. The nature of identity notion is problematic in social sciences and does not disappear when it comes into question for cities. On the contrary, complicated concepts and theoretical approaches used to explain the identity through city are in need of clarification. The urban identity, as a phenomenon, is a product of spatial and social-economic accumulation, change and evolution in the course of history, and open to interference. Striving to understand a city thorough its identity essentially requires exploring this city in all its aspects. The basic argument of this study is to reveal critical milestones in the development process of an urban identity and to describe what perceptions the city actors have on the urban identity of Hatay via these specified critical milestones. It is highly important for the understanding of urban identity to analyze how a city is perceived and what actually it is. The purpose of this study is to find out the evolution of urban identity in Hatay and to try to answer the question of how and why this change takes place and what kind of dynamics and city actors play a role by means of several conceptual and theoretical approaches. The main thesis of this study is that the new liberal phase, pervading the whole city by performing disidentification and stereotyping, have been converting the historical, political and current determinants of Hatay urban identity. The findings of the study indicate that Hatay urban identification erodes away rapidly, and that historical identification items lose its significance. In this process, current political attributes come to the fore, considered as intervention agent. Hatay begins to lose its speciality differing her from other cities. While the concept of toleration is an important key to step forward for Hatay city with regard to other cities, today there is a shift from "tolerance" to "endurance". Thus, cross cultural interaction and communication suffers seriously. The idea of reconstructing cities according to market principles and efforts to attach already existing cities to this economy model transform cities into a structure of economic and social "production". The urban identity rising on differences seems to gradually turn into a new identity character that finds its new value in search for marketing its own differences.
