Osmanlı Devleti'nin kuruluşunda, gaza/cihad anlayışı ve din etkisi gündemde olan konulardan biridir ve bunun tartışılması Herbert Adams Gibbons'un Osmanlı Devleti'nin kuruluş dönemiyle ilgili iddialarıyla başlamıştır. Gibbons, Osmanlı Devleti'nin kurucu unsurunu yerli Rumlara bağlamaya çalışmış, Osman Bey'in Anadolu'ya geldiğinde Müslüman olmadığını, etrafında gördüğü ırktaşlarından etkilenerek Müslüman olduğunu iddia etmiştir. İslam dinini kabul eden Osman Bey, hemen gaza ideolojisini benimsemiş ve daha önce iyi ilişkiler içerisinde olduğu tekfurlara saldırmaya başlamıştır. Temelde üç ana eksen üzerinde tartışmaların devam ettiğini görmekteyiz. Birincisi: Osmanlı'nın kuruluşunu tamamen dine bağlayan anlayıştır. Holy war-jihad and the religion impact are significant issues the foundation of Ottoman Empire and the allegations of Herbert Adams Gibbons regarding the rise period of the empire initiated the discussions. Gibbons claims that the founders of the empire were local Greeks (Rums); Osman I was not Muslim once he immigrated to Anatolia and converted into Islam with the impact of the Turks who already settled in the area. Havig acknowledged Islam, Osman I immediately adopted the jihad ideology and stared to attack the feudal landlords of Byzantium with who he once was in friendly relationship. The discussions basically last on three major directions. The first is the idea that connects foundation of the empire to the religion. Gibbons and Wittek, westerner historians, are admitted the pioneers of this stream. The second is the claim that the religion had no impact in the foundation of the empire at all an deven the jihad understanding never existed in Ottoman Empire. The third acknowledges the impact of the religion in the foundation of the empire, but it claims that it was not the sole elemennt in the foundation. The fact that human beings, being asocil entity, might have multiple perspectives cannot be denied. Thus, it is quite normal to come up with plenty various ideas regarding the foundation the empire. Besid religious factors, there could be financial factors affecting the foundation. It is not that simple to distinguish one from another with precise terms. However, we are to accept that all these factors have not same impact. The literature firmly identifies that the holy war, jihad and religion had powerful impact in the fondation of Ottoman Empire. Besides there are plenty Works that back this claim. Tuhfetü'l-Guzât fi Fezâili'l-Cihâd (Gift to War Veterans on the Superiorities of Jihad) Tevarih-i Al-i Osman and Kitâb-ı Cihan-Nümâ could be named among these works. The most significant common characteristic of these works is that they all defend the idea that the holy war, jihad and religion had powerful impact in the foundation of Ottoman Empire.
