Yabancı sermaye yatırımlarının ve bu yatırımların istihdam üzerindeki rolü, 1980'lerin ikinci yarısından itibaren ülkelerin ekonomik kalkınma politikaları içinde gittikçe daha fazla önem kazanmaya başlamıştır. Beraberinde getirdikleri yeni teknolojiler, yeni yönetim anlayışı ve birtakım olanaklar sayesinde bu yatırımlar, yalnız gelişmekte olan ülkeler tarafından değil, gelişmiş ülkeler tarafından da talep edilir bir hale gelmiştir. Yabancı yatırımların yaptığı pozitif katkılar, daha önce yabancı yatırımlara olumsuz gözle bakan birçok ülkenin de sınırlarını açmaya ve daha fazla doğrudan veya dolaylı yabancı sermaye yatırımlarını çekme üzerine dikkatlice yoğunlaşmalarını sağlamıştır. Yabancı sermaye yatırımları, ülke ekonomisinde teknolojik gelişmeyi hızlandırır, insan kaynaklarını geliştirir, uluslararası ticarete uyumlu olmayı sağlar, uluslararası şirketlerle karşı karşıya kalan firmalarının rekabet edebilirlik gücünü arttırarak gelişmesini teşvik eder. Böylece gelişmekte olan ülkeler yüksek bir ekonomik büyüme hızı yakalayabilir. Doğrudan ve dolaylı yabancı yatırımların ev sahibi ülke ekonomisinde büyüme yönünde etkisinin olması neo-klasik büyüme teorilerinde yer bulsa da asıl etkilerin içsel büyüme teorisi ile birlikte ortaya çıktığı görülmektedir. Foreign investment and the role of these investments over employment have become increasingly important in the countries' economic development policies since the second half of the 1980's.Thanks to the new technologies they have brought with them, new management understanding and some possibilities, these investments have become demanded not only by the developing countries but also by the developed countries.The positive contributions made by foreign investments have allowed many of the former countries, which have previously viewed the foreign investment to be negative, to concentrate on opening their borders and attracting more direct or indirect foreign investment. Foreign capital investment, accelerate technological development in the country's economy, develop human resources, it lets be compatible with international trade, encourages firms that are confronted with international companies to improve their competitiveness.So that developing countries can achieve a high rate of economic growth. The fact that direct and indirect foreign investments have an effect on the growth of the host country's economy has taken place in the neo-classical growth theories, but the actual effects appear to have coincided with the theory of internal growth It emphasizes the importance of growth in the theory of endogenous growth and the expansion of capital accumulation as a source of employment, as well as the transfer of technology, the training of the workforce and the development of skills.
