Doktora tezi olarak yapılan "XVI. Yüzyılın İlk Yarısında Diyarbekir Eyaleti'nde İktisadi Hayat (1518-1568)" adlı çalışmamız ile 1515 senesinde Osmanlı topraklarına katılarak Diyarbekir Eyaleti'nin Paşa Sancağı olan Amid başta olmak üzere, Eyalet içerisinde yer alan diğer sancak ve kazaların tahrir dönemleri süresince sahip olduğu sosyal ve iktisadi özellikler, sayısal verilerle analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Diyarbekir Eyaleti sınırları dahilinde bulunan tüm sancakların nüfus, toprak, tarım, ticaret ve sınâi alandaki hususiyetleri özelden genele ele alınarak, Osmanlı Devleti'nin 16. yüzyıldaki Güneydoğu Anadolu coğrafyası ile Orta doğu coğrafyasında zuhur eden sosyo-iktisadi gelişme ve değişmeler aydınlatılmaya gayret edilmiştir. Tez; giriş, beş bölüm ve sonuçtan teşekkül etmektedir. Giriş kısmında, konu hakkında bilgi verildikten sonra konunun bilimsel aydınlığa kavuşmasında yararlanılan arşiv belgelerine dair açıklamalarda bulunulmuştur. Birinci bölümde Diyarbekir Beylerbeyiliği'nin tesis edilmesinden hemen sonra uhdesinde yer alan sancak ve kazaların 16. yüzyıldaki idari yapılanması değerlendirilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, Diyarbekir Eyaleti'nin yerleşme ve nüfus özellikleri, yörede kesif durumda olan konar-göçer aşiretlerin demografik durumu; üçüncü bölümde toprak, üretim ve vergilendirme konularında ayrıntılı bilgi verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Dördüncü bölümde, Diyarbekir Eyaleti'nde müşahede edilen sınâi tesisler ve bu tesislerden sağlanan gelirler irdelenmiş, bunların Eyalet genelindeki payları değerlendirilmiştir. Beşinci bölümde ise Diyarbekir Eyaleti'nin bölgesel ticaret ağı içerisindeki potansiyel konumu aydınlatılmış, ticari faaliyetlerden sağlanan gelirlerin, sancak ve kazalar bazındaki dağılımı analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmada ağırlıklı olarak dönemin tahrir defterlerinden istifade edilmiş, bunun yanında Türkçe yazma eserler ile İngilizce ve Türkçe tetkîk eserlerden de yararlanılmıştır. Şüphesiz bu çalışma, Diyarbekir Eyaleti'nin sosyo-iktisadi yapısı üzerine yapılan son araştırma olmayacaktır. Dolayısıyla, bu çalışmanın ileride bu alanda yapılacak çalışmalara bir nebze de olsa ışık tutacağı, mevcut boşluğu biraz olsun dolduracağı kanaatindeyiz. This doctoral dissertation titled "Economic Life in the province of Diyarbekir in the Latter Half of the 16th Century (1518-1568)" attempts to analyze, through statistical data obtained from the tax registers of the mentioned period, the social and economic conditions of Amed, which became a part of the Diyarbekir province as the pasha sanjak in 1515 as well as other sanjaks (equivalent of a district in the Ottoman administrative system) and kazas (administrative subdivisions within a sanjak) within the Diyarbekir province. Having examined all the sanjaks within the Diyarbekir province, from particular to general, in terms of population, land, agriculture, trade, and industry, the study aims at elucidating the socio-economic developments and changes which took place in the South-eastern Anatolia and the Middle East regions of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. The dissertation consists of an introduction, five chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction gives information on the subject and provides explanations with regard to the archive documents used to elucidate the subject scientifically. In the first chapter, the administrative structure of the sanjaks and kazas in the 16th century that fell under the authority of the Diyarbekir province following its establishment has been scrutinized. The second chapter focuses on the settlement and population aspects of the Diyarbekir province and the demographic condition of the nomadic tribes of the region, whereas the third chapter gives detailed information on the subjects of land, production, and taxation. The fourth chapter looks through the industrial facilities within the Diyarbekir province and the revenue generated by them, and the revenue's share within the whole province is also analyzed. Finally, the fifth chapter elucidates the potential position of the Diyarbekir province in the regional trade network, and then analyzes the distribution of the income generated by the commercial activities between the sanjaks and kazas. The study has benefitted mainly from the tax registers. Besides, works written originally in Turkish and works translated into English or Turkish have been used. Undoubtedly, this study will not be the last one regarding the socio-economic structure of the Diyarbekir province. Therefore, we hope that this study will pave the way for studies to follow, and that it will, at least to a certain extent, fill in the gap within the literature.
