Doğal afetlerden, vahşi hayvanlar ve insanlardan korunmak için savunma yapıları inşa edilmiştir. İnsanoğlu ailesini ve yiyeceğini koruyabilmek için barındığı mekânın etrafını duvarlarla örmüş daha sonra birlikte yaşadığı diğer insan topluluklarıyla yerleşim alanları kurmuş ve güvenlikleri için bu mekânların etraflarını surlar ile çevirip tarihte ilk kaleleri oluşturmuştur. Anadolu, tarih boyunca birçok medeniyetin beşiği olmuştur. Bu çalışmada Anadolu'nun zengin kültürünün bir parçası olan ve antik dönemde Karia, Türklerin yerleşmesinden sonra Menteşe olarak adlandırılan bölgenin önemli şehirlerinden ve bir dönemde Menteşe Beyliğine başkentlik yapmış olan Beçin şehrinin savunma yapıları ele alınmıştır. Beçin, bir iç kale ve şehri çevreleyen dış surlar olmak üzere iki parçada değerlendirilebilir.Elips şeklinde bir plana sahip iç kale, dik kayalıklar üzerine kurulmuştur.Şehrin etrafını kuşatan surlar kalenin güneydoğu ve güneybatı tarafından şehri kuşatarakiç kaleye birleşmektedir. Kale ve şehir surlarının savunması,kule ve kapılarile güçlendirilmiştir. Savunma kuleleri ağırlıklı olarak iç kalenin güney cephesinde yer alırken, şehrin etrafını çeviren surların doğu ve güney kesiminde yer almaktadır. Beçin Şehrinin dikkat çeken en önemli özelliği, şehrin fiziki olarak iki ayrı bölgeden oluşmasıdır. Birinci kısım iç kalenin de bulunduğu, şehrin ilk kurulduğu ve surlarla çevrildiği alandır.Asıl iskân şehir surlarının yaklaşık tam ortasında Ahmet Gazi Medresesi ve Orhan Camii gibi önemli yapıların etrafında gerçekleşmiştir. İkinci kısım surların dışında asıl merkezden bir vadi ile ayrılan ve buraya yaklaşık 2 kilometre uzaklıktaki bir tepe üzerinde bulunmaktadır. Gerçekte şehrin bir mahallesi olan ve XIV. asrın ortalarından itibaren gelişmeye başlayan Kepez isimli bu ikinci bölgede cami, medrese, hamam gibi yapılar bulunmaktadır. Beçin Kalesi diğer Türk-İslam şehirlerinde olduğu gibi çekirdek konumda bir iskân merkezi değildir. Ancaksur dışında yer alan Kepez ileşehrin asıl merkezi olan Ahmet Gazi Medresesi ve çevresinin fiziki dokusunun oluşumunda önemli bir konumda bulunmaktadır. Bu durumda kalenin bir iç kale işlevini üstlendiği ve şehrin de tipik bir kale-kent modelini yansıttığı söylenebilir. Beçin Kalesinin önemi, hem Milas ovasına hem de Sodra Dağının güneyinden geçip Milas'ı batıda denize bağlayan yola hâkim bir konumda bulunmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Kalenin bulunduğu alanda Helenistik Dönem öncesine ait kalıntılar bulunsa da son şeklini Türk döneminde aldığı düşünülmektedir. The humans feeling of protecting themselves and belief of safety has been existed since the beginning of early history. They have been building defense structures in order to keep away from natural disasters and wild animals. Human mankinds have made great walls surrounding their a comodations so as to safeguard their families and commodities. Afterwards, they have formed certain habitats together with other human groups living with themselves and finally they have built the first castles by enclosing around them with city walls in terms of their security. Anatolia has been cradle of numerous civilizations for ages. In this study, Beçin Castle, which is a rich part of Anatolian culture in antique times called Karia and following The Turks dwelling having the name of Menteşe as an important city which was the capital city of Menteşe state sometime, has been discussed in regard of their defence structures. The city of Beçin can be avaluated in two parts as one inner castle and outher city walls surrounding it. The inner castle, having a elliptical plan, was constructed on steep rocks. On the other hand, the city walls surrounding the city combines to the castle by enclosing it from the southeast and southwest sides. The inner castle located on the north point of the city has a strategic importance in that it captures both the plain and the road which passes past the south of Mountain Sodra resulting in linking Milas to the sea from west. The castle and city walls were fortified by the defence ornamentation. While the defence towers take place mostly in the south part of inner castle, they appear to be in the easth and south districts of the walls surrounding the city. The most striking feauture of Beçin Castle is that it is composed of two seperated districts. The first one is the place, surrounded by walls, where there is the inner castle and the city was founded. The main settlement took place at the middle of the city walls around some significant buildings such as Ahmet Ghazi madrasah and the Orhan mosque. The second district, on the other hand, is situsted on a peak which is about 2 km far from. This district is seperated from the main central by a valley. In fact, this second district known as Kepez was an estate of the city and it was a district, having improved since the middle of 14th centuriy, where there are some structures such as mosque, madrasah and Turkish bath. However, the focus of this study is to document the defence structures of the city. The castle of Beçin, as in other Turk-Islam cities, is not a core central of settlement, buy it is located on a very important place to have affected the physical forming of the main central Ahmet Ghazi Madrasah, Kepez taking place outer of city walls and their vicinitiy. That's why, ıt can be said that the castle took an inner castle role and the city reflected a typical castle-city model. The importance of Beçin Castle stems from its domination to both the road which passes from the Mount of Sodra by linking Milas to the sea in the west and Milas plain. Althoug some artifacts belonging to pre-Helenistic era have been found in the area of the castle, it is thought that the latest state has formed in the period of Turkish.
