Bu çalışmada, Osmanlı Dönemi, İstanbul konaklarında görülen, cinsiyet örüntülerine ilişkin bir mahremiyet biçimlenişi olarak kabul edilen, harem ve selamlık mekânları araştırılmıştır. Söz konusu mekânlara ilişkin, var olan ayrışmanın ne anlama geldiği, mekânların içinde yaşayan bireyler tarafından nasıl kullanıldığı ve toplumsal gelişmeler neticesinde nasıl dönüşümler geçirdiği tez kapsamında incelenmiştir. Geleneksel Türk evinin ve Türk toplumunun geçirdiği değişimler göz önüne alındığında, hem mahremiyet çerçevesinde oluşturulmuş sınırlamalar, hem de toplumun kadın ve erkek cinsiyet örüntülerine yüklediği sorumluluklar mekânsal farklılaşmayı beraberinde getirmiştir. Söz konusu farklılaşma, İstanbul konaklarında görülen harem ve selamlık mekânlarının temelini oluşturmuştur. Ayrıca Osmanlı Devleti Modernleşme Dönemi sonrasında, toplumun büyük bir değişim geçirmesiyle birlikte harem ve selamlık mekanlarının, daha önce var olduğundan başka bir anlama bürünebileceği muhtemeldir. Gerçekten de 19. yüzyıl öncesinde evlere ilişkin çalışmalar böyle bir değişimin varlığını doğrulamaktadır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, harem ve selamlık mekanlarına, bilinenlerin ötesinde, farklı bir perspektiften bakar ve dönüşümü anlama çabasındadır. Tez çalışması bağlamında 19. yüzyıl ve 20. yüzyılın başlarında Osmanlı dönemi evlerinde -özellikle üst-orta gelir grubunun konaklarında- görülen harem-selamlık mekânları fiziksel ve yapısal özelliklerinin yanında, kullanıcılarının gündelik hayatlarını geçirdikleri mekânlar olarak düşünülerek, toplumsallıklarıyla birlikte değerlendirilmiştir. Bu noktadan hareketle, toplumsal dinamiklerin harem ve selamlık mekanlarına yansımasını ve söz konusu mekanların geçirmiş olduğu değişimleri en iyi şekilde anlatan kaynak dönemin romanlarıdır. Hem harem-selamlık mekanlarının mimarlık bağlamında işlenmesi, hem de toplumsal yaşamın sosyal ve psikolojik açıdan incelenmesi bakımından romanlar, harem ve selamlık mekanlarını aydınlatmak amacıyla bu çalışma bağlamında ele alınmıştır. In this study, the harem and selamlik sites, which are considered as a form of privacy relating to gender patterns in the Ottoman period, Istanbul mansions, have been investigated. Within the scope of the thesis, in relation to the sites in question, what the meaning of the existing separation is, how it is used by the individuals living in the spaces, and how it transforms as a result of social developments have been analyzed. When the changes of traditional Turkish houses and Turkish society are taken into consideration, both the limitations created within the frame of privacy and the responsibilities that society imposes on sexual patterns of women and men have led to spatial differentiation. The differentiation in question underlies the harem and selamlik sites in Istanbul mansions. Further, it is possible that in the aftermath of the Modernization Period of the Ottoman Empire, along with the dramatic change in society, the places of harem and selamlik could take a different form of meaning than that which existed before. Indeed, the studies regarding the houses of before the 19th century approve the existence of such a change. Thus, this study considers the harem and selamlik sites from a different perspective beyond what is known, and tries to comprehend the transformation. In the context of the thesis study, harem and selamlik, which were seen in the houses of the Ottoman period in the 19th century and early 20th century, especially in the mansions of the upper-middle income group, have been evaluated along with sociality by considering that they were the places in which their utilizers habited, as well as their physical and structural features. From this point of view, the most important source, which best reflects the changes of social dynamics to harem and selamlik and the changes that these places underwent, is the novels of the period. In the context of this study, both processing harem and selamlik sites as part of architecture and novels in terms of examining social life psychologically and socially have been scrutinized in order to illuminate the places of harem and selamlik.
