Kaya malzemesinin çekme dayanımı (ÇD), doğrudan (direkt) ve dolaylı (indirekt) yöntemler kullanılarak belirlenmektedir. Genelde doğrudan yöntemler hem zaman alıcı, hem de daha maliyetlidir. Dolaylı yöntemlerin yaygın kullanılanları ise daha basit, ucuz ve uygulaması kolay olduğundan tercih edilmektedir. Ancak yapılan birçok çalışmada, dolaylı yöntemlerden elde edilen sonuçların gerçek ÇD'nı temsil etmediği belirtilmektedir. Bu tez çalışmasında kayaçların ÇD değerlerinin doğru bir biçimde belirlenebilmesine imkân sağlayacak yeni bir yaklaşımın geliştirilmesi amacıyla bir dizi deneysel, nümerik ve istatistiksel analiz çalışması yürütülmüştür. Bu kapsamda sedimanter (kireçtaşı, killi kireçtaşı, dolomitik kireçtaşı), metamorfik (ince ve iri kristalli mermer) ve magmatik (tüf, andezit, granit, diyabaz) kökenli 9 farklı kayaç türü üzerinde öncelikle temel fiziksel ve mekanik özellikler belirlenmiştir. Ardından ilk olarak kayaçların tek eksenli ÇD (doğrudan yöntem) değerini belirleyebilmek için 3 farklı dambıl (dog bone) şekilli numune geometrisi tasarımı yapılmıştır. Tasarımlara uygun olarak hazırlanan numuneler üzerinde nümerik (gerilme analizleri) ve deneysel çalışmalar yürütülerek ve en uygun geometri tespit edilmiştir. Belirlenen geometriye göre her kayaç türünden numuneler hazırlanarak doğrudan ÇD değerleri belirlenmiştir. Daha sonra aynı kaya bloğundan elde edilmiş olan diğer numuneler üzerinde yaygın kullanılan dolaylı yöntemlerden Brezilya ÇD (3 farklı boy/çap oranında: 0,50; 0,75; 1,00), 3 nokta eğilme dayanımı (3 farklı standarda göre) ve 4 nokta eğilme dayanımı (3 farklı standarda göre) deneyleri yapılmıştır. Tüm deneylerde aynı cihaz kullanılarak cihaz kaynaklı hataların önüne geçilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Brezilya deneyleri sırasında yüksek hızlı çekim yapan kamera ile çatlak başlangıçlarının nerede olduğu belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen tüm bulgular üzerinde bir dizi istatiksel analiz çalışması yürütülmüştür. Deneysel ve nümerik analiz çalışmaları sonuçlarına göre hiçbir dolaylı yöntemin, kayaçlarda tek eksenli ÇD'nı temsil etmediği görülmüştür. Kayaçların tek eksenli ÇD'nı belirleyebilmek için yeni bir numune geometrisi önerilmiştir. Brezilya deneylerinde çatlağın genellikle numune ekseni boyunca ve merkezine yakın bir bölgede başladığı tespit edilmiştir. Brezilya deneyinde boy/çap oranının deney sonucu üzerinde önemli bir etkisinin olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. The tensile strength (TS) of rock material is determined by two different test methods, direct and indirect. In general, direct methods are both time consuming and more costly. Widely used indirect methods are preferred because they are simpler, cheaper and easy to implement. However, in many studies, it is stated that the results obtained from the indirect methods do not represent the uniaxial tensile strength. In this thesis, a number of numerical, experimental and statistical analysis studies were conducted in order to develop a new approach that would allow the accurate determination of the tensile strength values of the rocks. In this context, primarily, basic physical and mechanical properties were determined on 9 different rock types with sedimentary (limestone, argillaceous limestone (lymra) and dolomitic limestone), metamorphic (fine crystalline and holocrystalline marble) and magmatic (tuff, andesite, granite and diabase) origin. Then 3 different dumbbell-shaped specimen geometries were designed to determine the uniaxial tensile strength (direct method) values of the rocks. The most appropriate geometry was determined by carrying out numerical (stress analysis) and experimental studies on the samples prepared in accordance with the designs. According to the determined geometry, specimens of each rock type were prepared and uniaxial tensile strength values were determined. Then Brazilian TS (3 different thickness/diameter ratio: 0,50; 0,75; 1,00), 3 point bending strength (3 different standards) and 4 point bending strength (3 different standards) tests which are commonly used indirect methods were carried out on the samples obtained from the same rock block. The same test machine was used in all experiments in order to prevent errors caused by the machine. During the Brazilian splitting tests, high-speed shooting camera was used to determine crack initiation region. A series of statistical analysis studies were carried out on all findings. According to the results of experimental and numerical analysis studies, it was observed that none of indirect methods represent the uniaxial tensile strength of the rocks. A new specimen geometry has been proposed to determine the direct TS of the rocks. In Brazilian tests, it was found that the crack usually starts along the specimen axis and in a region close to its center. In order to estimate the uniaxial TS values of the rocks from indirect methods, new correction coefficients have been proposed. The coefficients which can be used in all rock types were found to be 0,50σtBrez, 0,33σ3PB, 0,40σ4PB. In addition, statistical models (which are best predictive of TS) including P wave velocity values are proposed by multiple lineer regression analysis.
