Metamalzemeler, doğada saf olarak var olmayan ve belirli bir frekans bandında negatif etkin elektriksel geçirgenlik, negatif etkin manyetik geçirgenlik, negatif kırılma indisi, ters doppler etkisi ve geriye yayılım gibi sıra dışı elektromanyetik özellikler gösterebilen yapay malzemelerdir. Bu sebeplerden dolayı metamalzemeler farklı birçok disiplinde araştırma konusu içerisinde kullanılmışlardır. Metamalzeme tabanlı sensör tasarımı günümüzde oldukça popüler bir araştırma konusudur. Bu kapsamda, metamalzeme tabanlı rezonatör ve/veya soğurucu yapıları kullanılarak sensör tasarımları yapılabilmektedir. Tasarımları yapılan bu sensörler; sıcaklık, nem, yoğunluk, konsantrasyon, basınç, kırılma indisi algılama gibi çok çeşitli algılama problemlerinde kullanım alanı bulabilmektedir. Bu sensörler genellikle etkin dielektrik sabiti değişimlerine karşın rezonans frekanslarında meydana gelen kaymalar dikkate alınarak tasarlanmıştır. Ayrık halkalı rezonatör yapıları literatürde en sık kullanılan metamalzeme tiplerindendir. Çift taraflı rezonatör yapılarında, tek taraflı rezonatör yapılarında bulunan öz endüktans ve öz sığa değerlerine ek olarak ortak endüktans ve ortak sığa değerleri bulunduğu için çift taraflı rezonatör yapılarının, sensör uygulamaları için tek taraflı rezonatör yapılarına göre daha iyi bir performans sağladığı daha önce literatürde gösterilmiştir. Bu tez kapsamında özgün bir çift taraflı rezonatör yapısı ile birlikte iki rezonatör yapısı arasında oluşan ortak sığa değerinin arttırılması ve bu sayede ara katman dielektrik sabiti değişimine karşı hassasiyetin çift taraflı ayrık halkalı rezonatör (ÇAHR) yapısına oranla iyileştirilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Bunun sonucu olarak da dik girme uyarım altında çift taraflı çapraz kapalı rezonatör (ÇÇKR) önerilmiştir. Sonrasında ise hem ÇAHR hem de ÇÇKR sensör prototipleri, nohut tozu nem algılama uygulamasında ve çözelti konsantrasyonu algılama uygulamalarında test edilmiştir. Sunulan sensör prototipleri test edilen uygulamalar için hem benzetim hem de deneysel ortamda karşılaştırmaları yapılmıştır. Sonuç olarak ÇAHR yapısına alternatif olarak önerilen ÇÇKR yapısının algılama ara katmanı değişimlerine karşı daha hassas bir tepki verdiği ortaya konmuştur. Son olarak da tasarımları yapılan sensör prototiplerinin terahertz frekans bandına ölçeklemeleri yapılmaya çalışılmıştır. Üretim olanaklarının yetersiz olmasından dolayı terahertz rezonatör yapılarının analizleri sadece benzetim ortamında yapılabilmiştir. Metamaterials are artificial materials which do not exist as purely in nature and can exhibit extraordinary electromagnetic properties such as negative effective electrical permittivity, negative effective magnetic permeability, negative refractive index, reverse doppler effect and backward propagation on a specific frequency band. For these reasons, metamaterials have been used in many different disciplines in the research topics. Metamaterial based sensor design is a very popular research topic at the present time. In this context, sensor designs can be made by using metamaterial based resonator and/or absorber structures. These designed sensors can be used in variety of detection problems such as temperature, humidity, density, concentration, pressure, refractive index detection. These sensors are generally designed considering the shifts in resonance frequencies to effective dielectric constant changes. Split ring resonator structures are among the most frequently used types of metamaterials in the literature. It has been previously shown in the literature that double sided resonator structures provide better performance than single sided resonators for sensor applications because the double sided resonator structures have mutual inductance and mutual capacitance values in addition to self inductance and self capacitance values which single sided resonator structures have. Within the scope of this thesis, it is aimed to increase the mutual capacitance value between two resonator structures with a novel double sided resonator structure and thus to improve the sensitivity to interlayer dielectric constant change compared to double sided split ring resonator (DSRR) structure. As a result, a double sided cross closed resonator (DCCR) has been proposed under normal excitation. Following, both DSRR and DCCR sensor prototypes were tested in chickpea humidity and solution concentration sensing applications. The presented sensor prototypes were compared in both simulation and experimental for the tested application. As a result, it has been shown that the DCCR structure, which was proposed as an alternative to the DSRR structure, gave a more sensitive response for sensing interlayer changes. Finally, designed sensor prototypes were tried to be scaled to the terahertz frequency band. Due to in sufficient production facilities, terahertz resonator structures could be analyzed in only simulation.
