Tipografi yirminci yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde, kübizm, fütürizm, dadacılık, konstrüktivizm, süprematizm gibi akımların yanı sıra Bauhaus Okulu ile De Stijl çevresinin üretimi olan sanat eserleri ve tasarımların etkisiyle modern resim, dadacı ve fütürist şiir ve mizanpajla yakın temas içerisine girmiştir. Tipografinin böylelikle hem biçim dili açısından hem de görsel iletişim aracı olma niteliğinde büyük bir değişime uğraması sonucunda ortaya çıkan yeni akım, avangart sanatçılar tarafından 'Yeni Tipografi' olarak tanımlanmıştır. Yeni Tipografi kolektif bir yaklaşımın ürünü olmasına karşın, onu bir sistem içinde kuramlaştırıp formülleştirerek standartlaşmasının temelini atmakla kalmayıp modern sanat kuram ve tekniklerini gündelik tasarım sorunlarına uyarlayan, bunları geniş kitlelere, matbaacı, dizgici ve tasarımcıya açıklayan, yazı ve kaligrafi eğitimi almış ilk isim Jan Tschichold olmuştur. Tschichold, Yeni Tipografi Hareketi'ni oluştururken dönemin önemli modern sanat hareketlerinden etkilenmiş, bu çevre ve akımların temsilcileri olan avangart sanatçılarla yoğun bir temas halinde bulunmuştur. Takip ettiği Bauhaus sergilerinde özellikle De Stijl çevresinin, süprematist ve konstrüktivistlerin eserlerden etkilenmiştir. Ayrıca kendisi gibi düşünen modern sanatçı ve tasarımcılardan oluşan Yeni Reklam Tasarımcıları topluluğunun bir üyesi olarak sergiler düzenlemiş ve bu sanatçılarla fikir alışverişinde bulunmuştur. Çalışmada hem Tschichold hem Yeni Tipografi hareketi hem de söz konusu avangart sanatçılar ve üretimleri üzerine yapılan alan yazın taramasından elde edilen veriler ışığında, modern sanatçıların eserleriyle Tschichold'un tasarımları arasında karşılaştırmaya dayalı biçimsel ve teknik analizler yapılmıştır. Bu analizlere göre tasarım, içerik ve tipografide pek çok ortaklığın olması, sanatçılarla kurmuş olduğu temas ve yazışmalarının açıkça gösterdiği üzere, Tschichold'un Yeni Tipografi Hareketi'nin ilkelerini belirlerken bu sanatçıların eserlerinden ve düşüncelerinden etkilenmiş olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada yapılan literatür taramasıyla biçimsel ve teknik analizler, Tshichold ve söz konusu avangart sanatçılar arasındaki temasın tek yönlü bir etki olmadığını da göstermektedir. Tschichold'un, 'Yeni Tipografi' kapsamında belirlediği ve yayınlarıyla duyurduğu uygulama prensipleri ve kavramsal çerçeveden başka onun üretimleriyle kuramlarının da bu sanatçıların tasarım anlayışlarının yanı sıra üretim süreçlerinde de etkili olduğu saptanmıştır. Mevcut tez çalışması bu bağlamda araştırma ve analizler sonucu ulaşılan destekleyici veriler ve yapılan saptamalara dayanarak söz konusu temas ve fikri alışverişin tek yönlü bir etki olmaktan ziyade karşılıklı bir etkileşim olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. In the first quarter of the twentieth century, typography had a close relationship with modern painting, dadaist, and futurist poetry and layout design under the influence of art works and designs by Bauhaus School and De Stijl environment as well as the movements such as cubism, futurism, Dadaism, constructivism, suprematism. The new movement, which emerged as a result of a major change in typography, both in terms of language of form and as a means of visual communication, was defined as "New Typography" by avant-garde artists. Although the new typography is the product of a collective approach, Jan Tschichold was the first not only to theorize new typography within a system, formulate and start its standardization but also to adapt the modern artistic thoughts and techniques to the problems of daily designs, who explain them to masses, printers, editors and designers, who has an education on lettering and calligraphy. When Tschichold was building the New Typography Movement, he was influenced by the important modern art movements of the time, and he was in intense contact with the avant-garde artists who were the representatives of those artistic environments and movements. Through the Bauhaus exhibitions he followed, he was particularly influenced by the works of suprematists and constructivists and of De Stijl participants. As a member of the New Advertising Designers, a group of modern artists and designers who have similar opinions, he held exhibitions and come together with them to exchange ideas. In this study, the formal and technical analysis based on comparison were made between works of modern artists and Tschichold's designs, in the light of the data compiled from the literature review both on Tschichold's biography and productions and the New Typography movement and also on the avant-garde artists and their productions. The similarities and alikenesses in design, content and typographic approach, which those analyses proved, and his contact and correspondences with these artists clearly show that Tschichold was influenced by the works and thoughts of these artists, when he was setting the principles of the New Typography Movement. The formal and technical analysis, and also the literature review manifest that, the contact between Tschichold and avant-garde artists created not a one-way effect, but an interaction between them. This study proves Tschichold has influenced these artist's conceptions of design and their creative process, through his graphical and typographical designs and the principles of application of New Typography along with the conceptual framework he put in his book. The present study puts forward, on the basis of the data compiled from literature review and the results of comparisons between the formal analyses, that the influences and idea exchanges were mutual interactions.
