Çalışma alanının bulunduğu, Aydın ve İzmir illeri arasında yer alan Söke ilçesi, kurulduğu süreçten günümüze önemli bir yerleşim olma niteliğini sürdürmüştür. Birçok önemli merkezin kesişiminde bulunan kent, bu özelliği ile farklı kültürlere ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Akdeniz iklimi özelliği taşıyan kentin ekonomisi genel olarak tarıma dayalı olup bulunduğu konum itibariyle turizm açısından da gelişim göstermektedir. İlk yerleşim tarihi ile ilgili kesin bir kaynak olmamakla beraber, tarih öncesi çağlarda şehrin bulunduğu bölgenin Latmos Körfezi olduğu bilinmektediri. Büyük Menderes Nehri'nin taşıdığı alüvyonlarla dolan körfezin içinde yer alan Söke, bu bakımdan birçok antik kentin de kesişimi noktasında bulunmuştur. İlk başlarda bir pazar niteliği taşıyan bölge, zamanla gelişmiş ve bir kent dokusu oluşturmuştur. Aydınoğulları ve Menteşeoğulları Beyliklerine ev sahipliği yapan şehir, 15. yüzyılda Osmanlı hâkimiyetine girmiştir. Kurtuluş Savaşı döneminde de stratejik konumu dolayısıyla birçok kez işgale maruz kalmış, 6 Eylül 1922 tarihinde işgalden kurtulmuştur. Bu tez kapsamında çalışılan Kemalpaşa Mahallesi, Söke'nin kuruluşundan bu yana yerleşim yeri olarak önem teşkil eden en eski mahallelerden biridir. Eski adı Rum Mahallesi olan bölge, Kurtuluş Savaşı sonrasında yapılan 1923 Lozan Barış Antlaşması'nda alınan mübadele kararına kadar, önemli bir bölümünü gayrimüslimlerin oluşturduğu bir yerleşim yeridir. Ayrıca Kemalpaşa Mahallesi dışında gayrimüslimlerin Söke'nin çevresinde ve köylerinde de yaşadığı bilinmektedir. Bağarası, Eski Doğanbey (Domatia-Domaçca), Güllübahçe (Gelebeç), Didim bu yerleşim yerlerinin başında gelmektedir. Plan özellikleri ve mimari dokusuyla çalışma dahilinde ele alınan yerleşim alanları Kemalpaşa Mahallesi ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Tez kapsamında ele alınan Söke Kemalpaşa Mahallesi, İzmir Kültür ve Tabiat Varlıklarını Koruma Kurulu tarafından 03.02.2001 tarihinde ve 9799 sayılı karar ile kentsel sit alanı ilan edilmiştir. Alanda şuanda elli altı adet tescilli parsel ve iki adet tescilli anıt ağaç bulunmaktadır. 2007 yılında hazırlanan koruma amaçlı imar planının yanında, alanda Söke Belediyesi ve Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi'nin ortak yürüttüğü sokak sağlıklaştıma projesi devam etmektedir. Tez kapsamında Söke Kemalpaşa Mahallesi'nde tescile önerilenler hariç toplamda tescilli elli sekiz konut yerinde incelenmiş olup on beş konut ise katalog bölümünde detaylı olarak ele alınmıştır. The study site, Söke, which is located between Aydın and İzmir, has been an important settlement since its establishment.Located at the intersection of many important centers, the city has hosted different cultures with this feature.The economy of the city, which has a Mediterranean climate is based on agriculture in general and is developing in terms of tourism in terms of its location.Although there is no definite source for the first settlement date, it is known that the area where the city was located in prehistoric times was the Bay of Latmosii.Soke, which is located in the bay filled with alluvium carried by the Great Menderes River, was found at the intersection point of many ancient cities.The region, which initially had the characteristics of a market place, developed over time and formed an urban fabric. The city, which was home to the Beylics of Aydınoğlu and Menteşeoğlu, came under Ottoman rule in the 15th century. During the War of Independence, it was occupied many times due to its strategic position and was liberated from the occupation on 6 September 1922. Kemalpaşa Neighborhood, which has been studied within this thesis, is one of the oldest neighborhoods that has been important as a settlement since the foundation of Söke.The region, formerly known as the Rum(Greek of turkish nationality) Neighborhood, was a settlement of non-Muslims with a significant portion of it until the exchange decision that was taken in the Lausanne Peace Treaty,1923, after the War of Independence. Besides, it is also known that non-Muslims lived not only in Kemalpaşa Neighborhood but also in the vicinity and villages of Söke. Bağarası, Old Doğanbey (Domatia-Domaçca), Güllübahçe (Gelebeç) and Didim are one of these one of these settlements. Settlement areas, including their plan features and architectural texture, within the scope of the study are limited to Kemalpaşa Neighborhood. Kemalpaşa Neighborhood of Söke,which is studied within the scope of the thesis, has been declared as an urban protected site with assize no 9799, by Izmir culture and Nature Protection Board on 03.02.2001. There are currently fifty-six registered parcels and two registered monumental trees in the area. In addition to the conservation aimed zoning plan, prepared in 2007, the street sanitation project, which is carried out jointly by Söke Municipality and Dokuz Eylül University, continues. Within the scope of the thesis, fifty-eight registered residences in total were examined on-site, except those proposed for registration Söke, Kemalpaşa Neighborhood and fifteen residences were discussed in detail in the catalogue section.
