Endüstriyel faaliyetlerle oluşan atıksular ve bileşenleri, yüzeysel suyun, yeraltı suyunun ve toprak zemininin kirlenmesini önlemek için deşarj edilmeden önce arıtma tesislerinde arıtılmalıdır. Atıksu arıtımında yaygın olarak kullanılan işlemlerden biri kimyasal arıtma teknolojisidir. En çok uygulanan kimyasal arıtma prosesleri; kimyasal pıhtılaşma, kimyasal çöktürme, kimyasal oksidasyon ve ileri oksidasyon, iyon değişimi ve kimyasal nötralizasyondur. Koagülasyon ve flokülasyon prosesleri atıksu arıtımının önemli bir parçasıdır. Alüminyum sülfat (Al2(SO4)3 ve demir klorür (FeCl3) uzun yıllardır en yaygın olarak kullanılan koagülantlardır ve uygulanmaları kolaydır. Bununla birlikte, bu koagülantların kullanıldığı koagülasyon prosesi, verimli atıksu arıtımını engelleyen büyük miktarda çamur üretmektedir. Daha az çamur veya yeniden kullanılabilir çamur üreten bir koagülant, çamur arıtımı ve bertarafı ile ilişkili birçok çevresel ve ekonomik problemlere daha iyi bir çözüm sunacaktır. Bu çalışmada; jar testleri uygulanarak endüstriyel atıksuyun arıtılmasında zirkonyum tetraklorür (ZrCl4), titanyum tetraklorür (TiCl4) ve zirkonyum oksiklorür (ZrOCl2.8H2O) alternatif koagülantlarının, Al2(SO4)3.18H2O ve FeCl3 klasik koagülantlarına göre karşılaştırılmalı olarak değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır. Kimyasal oksijen ihtiyacı (KOİ) ve askıda katı madde (AKM) giderimleri üzerine başlangıç pH (4-10) ve başlangıç koagülant dozunun (10-100 mg/L) etkileri araştırılmıştır. Ek olarak, kullanılan tüm koagülantlar için optimize edilmiş deney koşullarında çöken çamur hacmi ve çamur hacim indeksi (SVI) belirlenmiştir. 100 mg/L koagülant dozunda KOİ giderim verimleri sırasıyla TiCl4 için pH 8 değerinde %69,33, ZrCl4 için pH 4 değerinde %67,20, FeCl3 için pH 4 değerinde %66,66, ZrOCl2.8H2O için pH 4 değerinde %66,54 ve Al2(SO4)3.18H2O için pH 6 değerinde %64,66 olmuştur. Bu sonuçlar, pH 8 değerinde 100 mg/L TiCl4 dozunda en yüksek KOİ giderim veriminin (%69,33) elde edildiğini göstermiştir. En yüksek AKM giderim verimi (%98,32), 50 mg/L Al2(SO4)3.18H2O dozunda pH 8 ve 10 değerlerinde elde edilmiştir. TiCl4 koagülantı için çöken çamur hacmi ve SVI değeri, ZrCl4, ZrOCl2.8H2O, Al2(SO4)3.18H2O ve FeCl3 koagülantlarından daha düşük olmuştur. ZrCl4, ZrOCl2.8H2O, FeCl3 ve Al2(SO4)3.18H2O koagülantları için SVI değerleri sırasıyla 128,13 mL/g, 92,39 mL/g, 72,26 mL/g ve 69,66 mL/g olurken; TiCl4 koagülantı için SVI değeri 48,84 mL/g olmuştur. TiCl4 diğer koagülantlara göre nispeten daha kompakt bir çamur üretmiştir. Sonuçlar, ZrCl4, TiCl4 ve ZrOCl2.8H2O'nun endüstriyel atıksu arıtma işlemlerinde alternatif koagülant olarak kullanabileceğini göstermektedir. Ek olarak, sonuçlar TiCl4'ün hem KOİ giderimi hem de daha az çamur üretimi açısından etkili bir koagülant olduğunu göstermiştir. Wastewaters and their ingredients which are formed by industrial activities must be treated before discharge into suitable receivers in order to prevent the pollution of surface water, groundwater and soil ground. One of the widely used processes in wastewater treatment is chemical treatment technology. The mostly implemented chemical treatment processes are: including chemical coagulation, chemical precipitation, chemical oxidation and advanced oxidation, ion exchange and chemical neutralization. Coagulation and flocculation processes are an important part of wastewater treatment. Aluminium sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) are the most commonly used coagulants many years and are easy to handle and apply. However, the coagulation process using these coagulants produces large quantities of sludge which inhibit efficient wastewater treatment. A coagulant that produces less sludge or more reusable sludge offers a better solution to many environmental and economic problems associated with sludge treatment and disposal. In this study, the evaluation of zirconium tetrachloride (ZrCl4), titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) and zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl2.8H2O) alternative coagulants in comparison with conventional coagulants, such as Al2(SO4)3.18H2O and FeCl3 were performed using jar test experiments for industrial wastewater treatment. The effect of initial pH (4−10) and initial coagulant dose (10−100 mg/L) on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solids (SS) removal were investigated. Additionally, the settled sludge volume and sludge volume index (SVI) of all the coagulants were determined for optimized experiment conditions. When coagulant dose was 100 mg/L, the percentage removals of COD were 69.33% at pH 8 for TiCl4, 67.20% at pH 4 for ZrCl4, 66.66% at pH 4 for FeCl3, 66.54% at pH 4 for ZrOCl2.8H2O, and 64.66% at pH 6 for Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, respectively. These results showed that the maximum removal efficiency of COD (69.33%) was achieved with 100 mg/L TiCl4, at pH 8. The maximum removal efficiency of SS (98.32%) was achieved with 50 mg/L alum, at pH 8 and 10. The settled sludge volume and SVI generated by the TiCl4 was lower than for the ZrCl4, ZrOCl2.8H2O, Al2(SO4)3.18H2O and FeCl3. ZrCl4, ZrOCl2.8H2O, FeCl3 and Al2(SO4)3.18H2O resulted in a 128.13 mL/g, 92,39 mL/g, 72.26 mL/g, 69.66 mL/g while the SVI by TiCl4 was 48.84 mL/g. TiCl4 produced a relatively compact sludge as compared to the other coagulants. The results indicate that ZrCl4, TiCl4 and ZrOCl2.8H2O could be used alternative coagulants in industrial wastewater treatment processes. In addition, the results showed that TiCl4 was an effective coagulant both in terms of COD removal and less sludge production.
