Bu tez çalışmasında, 1) iki farklı çamur yaşında (SRT) işletilen laboratuvar ölçekli bir Membran Biyoreaktör'de (MBR), devlet hastanesi ve bir merkezi medikal laboratuvarı atıksularının konvansiyonel ve seçilen ilaç etken madde parametreleri açısından giderim performansının karşılaştırılması ve laboratuvar ölçekli MBR ve aktif çamur (AÇ) sisteminin arıtma performansının belirlenmesi, 2) Devlet hastanesi atıksuyu ile beslenen ve düşük oksijen konsantrasyonunda (0,3 mg/L) eş zamanlı nitrifikasyon ve denitrifikasyon (SND) prosesi ile işletilen bir MBR'de, ilaç etken maddelerin ve azotlu bileşiklerin giderim performanslarının değerlendirilmesi ve farklı çözünmüş oksijen (ÇO) konsantrasyonlarında işletilen MBR sisteminin Yaşam Döngüsü Analizi (YDA) kapsamında çevresel etkilerinin karşılaştırılması, 3) Hastane ve medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyunun AÇ ve MBR çamuruna akut inhibisyon etkilerini belirlemek için teorik ve deneysel çalışmalar yürütülmüştür. Çalışmanın 1. Bölümünde, MBR sistemi hastane ve medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyu ile 60 gün (Faz-1) ve 20 gün (Faz-2) SRT'de çalıştırılmıştır. Ayrıca laboratuvar ölçekli MBR ve AÇ sistemlerinin hastane atıksuyunu arıtma performansları belirlenerek karşılaştırılmıştır. Faz-1 ve Faz-2'de, her iki atıksu tipi için farklı SRT'lerde konvansiyonel parametreler (kimyasal oksijen ihtiyacı, biyolojik oksijen ihtiyacı ve azotlu bileşikler) açısından yüksek giderim verimleri tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında, tüketimi yoğun olan ve atıksularda sıklıkla izlenen Caffeine (CAF), Carbamazepine (CBZ), Cefalexin (CFX), Ciproflaxacin (CIP), Clarithromycin (CLA), Erythromycin (ERY), Diclofenac (DIC), Naproxen (NPX) ilaç etken maddeleri seçilmiştir. Hastane atıksuyundan MBR ile bazı ilaç etken maddelerin gideriminde, SRT 20 gün şartlarında, SRT 60 güne göre bir miktar daha yüksek giderim verimleri tespit edilmiştir. Bu durum, atıksu karakteristiğindeki salınımlar sebebi ile kararlı koşulların işletimin ortalarında sağlanması ve bazı dönemlerde arıtma verimindeki düşüşler ile ilişkilendirilebilir. Dolayısıyla, ilaç etken madde giderimi ile işletme koşulları arasında ilişki olduğu öngörülmüştür. Medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyunun MBR ile arıtımında ise hastane atıksuyuna kıyasla ilaç etken madde giderim verimleri daha düşük seviyelerde tespit edilmiştir. Bu durum, medikal laboratuvarı atıksularının içerdiği kimyasal maddeler ve bu maddelerin yüksek konsantrasyonları sebebi ile arıtma performansının olumsuz etkilenmesi olarak açıklanabilir. Bu bulgu, medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyunun arıtıldığı MBR'de gerçekleştirilen Vibrio fischeri akut toksisite testleri ile de doğrulanmıştır. Faz-1 ve Faz-2'nin yanı sıra, hastane atıksuyunun MBR ve aktif çamur prosesi ile arıtılabilirliği üzerine de çalışmalar yürütülmüştür. Beklendiği üzere, konvansiyonel parametreler açısından MBR sistemi nispeten daha yüksek giderim performansı göstermiştir. İlaç etken maddelerin çoğunda MBR teknolojisi üstünlük gösterirken, bazılarında her iki teknoloji yakın seviyelerde performans göstermiştir. Tez çalışmasının 2. bölümünde hastane atıksuyunun arıtıldığı ve düşük çözünmüş oksijen (ÇO) konsantrasyonlarında SND ile işletilen MBR sistemi, toplam azot ve ilaç etken madde giderim performansı açısından değerlendirilmiştir (Faz-3). Faz-1 ve Faz-2'de tespit edilen Transmembran Basıncı (TMP) ile Faz-3'de tespit edilen TMP değerleri dikkate alındığında, düşük oksijen konsantrasyonlarında, membran sıyırma etkisinin azalmasından dolayı daha hızlı bir tıkanma eğilimi gözlenmiştir. Bu bulgu, MBR'nin SND koşullarında çalıştırılmasında bir kısıt olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Faz-3'te, nitrifikasyon, denitrifikasyon ve toplam azot giderim verimleri sırasıyla %69, %73 ve %51 olarak tespit edilmiştir. SND koşullarında, bazı ilaç etken madde giderimlerinde önemli oranda azalmalar gözlenmiştir. Bu durum, bazı ilaç etken maddelerin giderim verimi ile SND şartlarının ilişkili olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Faz-3'ün son kısmında ise, Faz-1 ve Faz-2'de yüksek ÇO konsantrasyonlarında işletim ile Faz-3 te uygulanan düşük ÇO konsantrasyonlarında işletim, YDA metodolojisi ile karşılaştırılarak, çevresel etkileri değerlendirilmiştir. Düşük ÇO şartlarına geçişte, enerji tüketimi ve tatlı/tuzlu su ötrofikasyon etkilerinde azalma gözlenirken, küresel ısınma etkisinde N2O artışından dolayı artış tespit edilmiştir. Toplam çevresel etkinin ise %30 oranında azalacağı tahmin edilmiştir. Tez çalışmasının son bölümünde ise BS EN ISO 8192:2007 metodunda tarif edilen yönteme göre hastane ve medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyunun aktif çamur ve MBR çamuru üzerine akut inhibisyon testleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bir atıksu akımı içerisine farklı oranlarda hastane ve medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyu eklenerek toplam, heterotrofik ve nitrifikasyon inhibisyonları tespit edilmiştir. Hem hastane hem de medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyunun aktif çamur ve MBR çamurunda yapılan testlerinde, MBR'deki nitrifikasyon bakterilerinin aktif çamura göre daha dirençli olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu durum, MBR'de mikroorganizma çeşitliliğinin fazla olması, reaktördeki yüksek katı madde konsantrasyonları ve toksik yüklere tolerans ile açıklanabilir. Her iki atıksu için, karışımda atıksu oranı arttıkça inhibisyon artış göstermiştir. Bu bölümde elde edilen bir diğer sonuç ise, test çözeltisinde organik maddenin ayrışma hızlarındaki farktan dolayı heterotrofik inhibisyonun açıklanmasında metodun yetersiz kalmasıdır. Tez çalışmasının Faz-1, Faz-2, Faz-3'ü ve akut toksisite sonuçları birlikte değerlendirildiğinde, tam aerobik koşulların aksine, SND koşullarında ilaç etken maddelerin birçoğunun giderim verimlerinin düşük seviyelerde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Dolayısıyla, düşük ÇO şartları, nitrifikasyon ve denitrifikasyon verimlerindeki değişimlerin ilaç etken maddelerin giderimini etkilediği söylenebilir. Ayrıca, kentsel atıksuların arıtıldığı bir arıtma tesisine gelen atıksu miktarı içerisinde, hastane veya medikal laboratuvarı atıksuyunun hangi oranda akut inhibiyon etkisi yaratacağı da bu metotla tespit edilerek atıksu arıtma tesislerinin sürdürülebilir işletilmesine katkı sağlanabilir. The work in this dissertation was executed in three stage: 1) Comparison of the removal performance of the public hospital and a central medical laboratory wastewaters in terms of conventional parameters and selected pharmaceutical care products (PCPs) in a laboratory scale Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) operated at two different sludge ages (SRT), and determination of the treatment performance of laboratory scale MBR and activated sludge (AS) system, 2) Evaluation of the removal performance of PCPs and nitrogen compounds in a MBR fed with public hospital wastewater and operated with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process at low oxygen concentration (0.3 mg/L), and comparison of environmental impacts of the MBR system operated at different dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations within the scope of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) method, 3) Investigation of the acute inhibition effects of hospital and medical laboratory wastewater on AS and MBR sludge. In the first stage, the MBR system was operated with hospital and medical laboratory wastewater at 60 days (SRT) (Phase-1) and 20 days SRT (Phase-2). In addition, the treatment performance of hospital wastewater in lab-scale MBR and AS system was compared. In Phase-1 and Phase-2, high removal efficiencies in terms of conventional parameters (chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, nitrogen compounds) in different SRTs have been detected for both wastewater sources. Caffeine (CAF), Carbamazepine (CBZ), Cefalexin (CFX), Ciproflaxacin (CIP), Clarithromycin (CLA), Erythromycin (ERY), Diclofenac (DIC), Naproxen (NPX) PCPs were selected. Considering the removal some of PCPs from hospital wastewater by MBR, slightly higher removal efficiencies were detected in SRT 20 days compared to SRT 60 days. This can be correlated by the satisfy of steady state conditions in the middle of operation due to the fluctuating in the wastewater characteristics and the decrease in the treatment efficiency some period. Thus, it is predicted that there is a relationship between PCPs removal and operating conditions. In the treatment of medical laboratory wastewater by MBR, it has been determined that PCPs removal efficiency is lower than the hospital wastewater. This situation can be explained as the negative effects on treatment performance due to the chemical substances contained in medical laboratory wastewater and the high concentrations of these substances. This finding was confirmed by the Vibrio fischeri acute toxicity tests performed in the MBR where the medical laboratory wastewater was treated. In addition to Phase-1 and Phase-2, studies have been carried out on the treatability of hospital wastewater by MBR and activated sludge process. As expected, the MBR system showed a relatively higher removal performance for conventional parameters. MBR technology has performed better in the removal most of the selected PCPs, and some of them have been found to have similar performance in both technologies. In the second stage, the MBR system, in which hospital wastewater is treated and operated with SND at low DO conditions, was evaluated in terms of total nitrogen and PCPs removal performance (Phase-3). Considering the Transmembrane Pressure (TMP) values determined in Phase-1 and Phase-2, Phase-3, a faster fouling tendency was observed in low oxygen concentrations due to the decrease on membrane surface stripping effect. This finding indicates that MBR has a disadvantage in operating under SND conditions. In Phase-3, nitrification, denitrification and total nitrogen removal efficiencies were determined as 69%, 73% and 51%, respectively. In SND conditions, significant reductions in some pharmaceuticals products removals were observed. It is estimated that the removal of some PCPs and SND condition are related. In the last part of Phase-3, the operation at high DO concentrations in Phase-1 and Phase-2 and low DO concentrations conditions in Phase-3 were compared with the LCA methodology, and their environmental effects have been evaluated. In the transition to low DO conditions, a decrease was observed in energy consumption and fresh/salt water eutrophication effects, while an increase in global warming effect was observed due to the increase in N2O. In this study, the approximately 30% decrease in freshwater and saltwater eutrophication and a 13% increase in global warming effect were calculated in the transition from high DO conditions to low DO conditions. It was estimated that the total environmental impact will decrease by 30%. In the last stage, acute inhibition tests were performed on activated sludge and MBR sludge of hospital and medical laboratory wastewater according to the method described in BS EN ISO 8192: 2007. Total, heterotrophic and nitrification inhibition were determined by adding different amounts of hospital and medical laboratory wastewater, known as test materials, to the wastewater stream. In the tests performed on activated sludge and MBR sludge of both hospital and medical laboratory wastewaters, it was determined that nitrification bacteria in MBR are more resistant than the activated sludge. This can be explained by the diversity of microorganisms in MBR, higher solids concentrations in the reactor and tolerance to toxic loads. For both test materials, inhibition increased as the wastewater percentage increased in the mixture. However, the method was weak in terms of explaining the heterotrophic inhibition due to the difference in the degradation rates of organic matter in the test solution. According to the findings of Phase-1, Phase-2, Phase-3 and acute toxicity results, unlike the full aerobic conditions, it has been determined that most of the PCPs have low removal efficiencies under SND conditions. Therefore, it can be said that low DO conditions, changes in nitrification and denitrification efficiency affect the removal of PCPs. In addition, in the amount of wastewater coming to a treatment plant where municipal wastewater is treated, the rate of acute inhibition of hospital or medical laboratory wastewater can be determined using this method, and a significant contribution can be made towards a sustainable operation of wastewater treatment plants. In the last part of Phase-3, the operation at high DO concentrations in Phase-1 and Phase-2 and low DO concentrations conditions in Phase-3 were compared with the LCA methodology, and their environmental effects have been evaluated. In the transition to low DO conditions, a decrease was observed in energy consumption and fresh/salt water eutrophication effects, while an increase in global warming effect was observed due to the increase in N2O. In this study, the approximately 30% decrease in freshwater and saltwater eutrophication and a 13% increase in global warming effect were calculated in the transition from high DO conditions to low DO conditions. It was estimated that the total environmental impact will decrease by 30%. In the last stage, acute inhibition tests were performed on activated sludge and MBR sludge of hospital and medical laboratory wastewater according to the method described in BS EN ISO 8192: 2007. Total, heterotrophic and nitrification inhibition were determined by adding different amounts of hospital and medical laboratory wastewater, known as test materials, to the wastewater stream. In the tests performed on activated sludge and MBR sludge of both hospital and medical laboratory wastewaters, it was determined that nitrification bacteria in MBR are more resistant than the activated sludge. This can be explained by the diversity of microorganisms in MBR, higher solids concentrations in the reactor and tolerance to toxic loads. For both test materials, inhibition increased as the wastewater percentage increased in the mixture. However, the method was weak in terms of explaining the heterotrophic inhibition due to the difference in the degradation rates of organic matter in the test solution. According to the findings of Phase-1, Phase-2, Phase-3 and acute toxicity results, unlike the full aerobic conditions, it has been determined that most of the PCPs have low removal efficiencies under SND conditions. Therefore, it can be said that low DO conditions, changes in nitrification and denitrification efficiency affect the removal of PCPs. In addition, in the amount of wastewater coming to a treatment plant where municipal wastewater is treated, the rate of acute inhibition of hospital or medical laboratory wastewater can be determined using this method, and a significant contribution can be made towards a sustainable operation of wastewater treatment plants.
