Bu tez, Abdulrazak Gurnah ve Cengiz Dağcı'nın seçilmiş dört romanı çerçevesinde edebi travma teorisini kullanarak travmatik geçmişin edebi temsilini araştırmayı ve karşılaştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Edebi travma teorisi amacı travmanın kendisini veya romanlarda karakter üzerindeki etkilerini tasvir etmektir. Bu noktada, travmanın farklı disiplinlerde tanımı, işlevleri ve etkileri, okuyucuya ne kadar olduğu gibi aktarıp aktaramadığına dair devam eden tartışmalar olsa da, yazılı metinlerin unutulmuş ya da susturulan ulusların sesleri olması bağlamında oldukça değerli olduğu bilinmektedir. Abdulrazak Gurnah'ın seçkin iki romanı Gravel Heart ve The Last Gift, yirminci yüzyılın ortalarında Zanzibar'da yaşanan ulusal trajedilerin yazarın anlatısıyla günümüze taşınması bağlamları açısından oldukça anlamlıdır. Öte yandan Cengiz Dağcı'nın seçkin eserleri, Anneme Mektuplar ve Badem Dalında Asılı Bebekler, 1929 ve 1944 Büyük Kırım sürgünleri öncesindeki gelişmeleri yansıtan, ulusun durumu romanlarıdır. Bu çalışma, travmayı üç boyutta inceleyecektir: birincisi, genel olarak travma teorisine etkili psikologlar ve eleştirmenlerin bakış açılarından bakacak, ikincisi, temel romanların travmayı nasıl temsil ettiği ve üçüncüsü, yaşanan bireysel ve kolektif travmaların etkileri ve sonuçları incelecektir. Tezin sonuç bölümü, incelenen romanlar arasındaki benzerlikler ve zıtlıklar gösterilecektir. Travma teorisinin romanlara uygulanması farklılıklardan çok benzerlikleri ortaya çıkardı. Bu, postkolonyal kurguyu araştıran eleştirmenlerin çoğunluğunun ifade ettiği bir bakış açısıdır. The present dissertation aims to explore and compare the literary representation of the traumatic past by using literary trauma theory within the framework of the selected four novels of Abdulrazak Gurnah and Cengiz Dagci. The main objective of the literary trauma theory is to depict the trauma itself or its effects on the character in the novels. At this point, although there are ongoing debates about the definition, functions, and effects of trauma in different disciplines, whether it can be conveyed to the reader as it is or not, it is known that written texts are rather valuable in the context of being the voices of forgotten or silenced nations. Abdulrazak Gurnah's two selected novels Gravel Heart and The Last Gift are quite meaningful with respect to their contexts in which the national tragedies that took place in Zanzibar in the mid-twentieth century were brought to the present through the writer's narrative. On the other hand, Cengiz Dağcı's selected works, Letters to My Mother and Babies Hanging on the Almond Branch are the state-of-the nation novels reflecting the developments before the 1929 and 1944 Great Crimean exiles. This study will examine trauma in three dimensions: first, it will look at the theory of trauma in general from the perspectives of influential psychologists and critics, second, how the essential novels represent trauma, and third, the effects and consequences of the trauma experienced. The conclusion of the dissertation will draw comparison and contrasts between the novels under study. The application of trauma theory to the novels revealed more similarities than differences. This is actually the point of view expressed by the majority of critics exploring postcolonial fiction.
