Kronik hastalıklar arasında yer alan kanser, görülme sıklığı olarak dünyada kalp ve damar hastalıklarından sonra ikinci sırada yer almaktadır. Hücrelerin anormal çalışması ve çoğalmasının sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan kanser, bireyleri psikolojik, ekonomik ve sosyo-kültürel açıdan etkilemektedir. Bu sebeple, kanser hastalığı incelenirken, tıbbi yönü ile birlikte, bireyi ve toplumu etkileyen yönleriyle ele almak hastalığın sürecinin anlaşılmasında daha kapsamlı bilgilere ulaşılması açısından önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, bireylerin kanser hastalığı ile ilgili algılarının değerlendirilmesidir. Bu amaçla yapılan alan araştırması kapsamında Bursa il merkezinde kanser hastası ve yakını 502 birey, kanser hastası olmayan 508 birey olmak üzere toplam 1010 bireye ulaşılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan 'Kanser Algısı Anketi' uygulanmıştır. Anketin birinci bölümünde katılımcıların sosyodemografik özeliklerine ilişkin 8 soru; ikinci bölümde kanser hastalığına ilişkin 8 soru ve üçüncü bölümde 5'li likert ölçeği üzerine yerleştirilen 30 ifade yer almıştır. Araştırmanın verileri 1 Şubat - 31 Mayıs 2019 tarihleri arasında toplanmıştır. Araştırma verileri faktör analizine tabi tutularak bireylerin kanser hastalığı ilişkin algıları 'hekimlere güven duyma', 'umutsuzluk ve güvensizlik', 'kanser farkındalığı', 'hastalık bilinci', 'moral ve desteğin önemi' ve 'tedaviyi mümkün görme' alt boyutları üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda katılımcıların, kanser algısı ölçeğinde yer alan 30 ifadeye ilişkin toplam Cronbach's alfa katsayısının 0,744 olduğu görülmektedir. Bu alt boyutlar; 'hekimlere güven duyma' (0,799), 'umutsuzluk ve güvensizlik' (0,749), 'kanser farkındalığı' (0,732), 'hastalık bilinci' (0,782) ve 'tedaviyi mümkün görme' (0,728) olup; bu alt boyutlarda Cronbach's alfa katsayısının değerinin yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Kanser hastası ve yakınları ile kanser hastası olmayanların alt boyut puanları karşılaştırıldığında; kanser hastası ve yakınlarının 'hekimlere güven duyma', 'umutsuzluk ve güvensizlik', 'kanser farkındalığı', 'hastalık bilinci', 'tedaviyi mümkün görme' alt boyutlarında kanser hastası olmayanlara göre daha yüksek puan aldıkları tespit edilmiştir. Her iki grupta da 'moral ve desteğin önemi' (0,707) alt boyutunda farklılık bulunamamıştır. Araştırma sonucunda ayrıca cinsiyet, medeni durum, eğitim ve çalışma durumları demografik değişkenlere göre karşılaştırılmış ve bazı değişkenlerde anlamlı farklılıklar belirlenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre bireylerin kanser hastalığı ile ilgili algıları yukarıda yer alan boyutlar çerçevesinde incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Within the scope of the field research conducted for this purpose, a total of 1010 individuals, 502 individuals with cancer and their relatives, and 508 individuals without cancer, were reached in the city center of Bursa. As a data collection tool, the 'Cancer Perception Questionnaire' prepared by the researcher was applied. In the first part of the questionnaire, 8 questions about the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants; In the second part, there were 8 questions about cancer and in the third part, 30 statements on a 5-point Likert scale. The data of the research were collected between 1 February - 31 May 2019. The research data were subjected to factor analysis and individuals' perceptions of cancer disease were evaluated through the sub-dimensions of "trust in physicians", "hopelessness and insecurity", "cancer awareness", "awareness of the disease", "importance of morale and support" and "seeing treatment possible". As a result of the research, it is seen that the total Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 30 expressions in the cancer perception scale of the participants is 0.744. These sub-dimensions are; 'confidence in physicians' (0.799), 'hopelessness and insecurity' (0.749), 'cancer awareness' (0.732), 'disease awareness' (0.782) and 'seeing treatment as possible' (0.728); Cronbach's alpha coefficient was found to be high in these sub-dimensions. When the sub-dimension scores of cancer patients and their relatives and non-cancer patients were compared; cancer patients and their relatives in the sub-dimensions of 'trust in physicians', 'hopelessness and insecurity', 'cancer awareness', 'disease awareness', and 'seeing treatment possible'. When the sub-dimension scores of cancer patients and their relatives and non-cancer patients were compared; It has been determined that cancer patients and their relatives have higher scores in the sub-dimensions of "trust in physicians", "hopelessness and insecurity", "cancer awareness", "awareness of the disease", "seeing treatment possible" than those who do not have cancer. No difference was found in the 'importance of morale and support' (0.707) sub-dimension in both groups. As a result of the research, gender, marital status, education and employment status were compared according to demographic variables and significant differences were determined in some variables. According to the results of the research, the perceptions of individuals about the cancer disease were tried to be examined within the framework of the above-mentioned dimensions.
