Yıllar içerisinde çevre sorunlarının çözümlerinde çeşitli yöntemler oluşturulmuş, özellikle Tiflis Konferansı ile birlikle başlayan çevre eğitimi konsepti çevre sorunları ile mücadelede önemini göstermiştir. Sürdürülebilir çevre için, çevre eğitiminin esas amacının çevre okuryazarı bireyler yetiştirmek olduğu literatürde vurgulanmıştır. Bu kapsamda gelecek nesillerin çevre okuryazarı bireyler olarak yetiştirilmesinde hayati önemi bulunmakla birlikte, bu sorunluluk öğretmenlerin omuzlarına düşmektedir. Çünkü gelecek nesillerin inşası öğretmenlerin görevidir. Bu sorumluluğu icra edebilmek için, eğitim fakültelerinden, görev yapılan okullara kadar öğretmen ve öğretmen adaylarının öncelikle kendilerinin çevre okuryazarı bireyler olmaları gerekmektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışmanın amacı; sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının çevre okuryazarlıklarının çok yönlü bir şekilde incelenmesidir. Çalışmada betimsel tarama modeli kullanılmış ve toplanan nicel veriler analiz edilmiştir. Öğretmen adaylarının çevre okuryazarlık düzeylerini araştırmak amacıyla çalışmada Kaplowitz ve Levine (2005) tarafından geliştirilip uygulanan, Teksöz, Şahin ve Ertepınar (2010) tarafından Türkçeye uyarlanan Çevre Okuryazarlığı Ölçeği (ÇOYÖ) kullanılmıştır. Ölçek; Çevreye Yönelik Tutum (ÇYT), Çevre İli İlgili Kullanım (ÇİİK) ve Çevre Sorunlarına İlgi (ÇSİ) alt boyutlarından oluşmakla beraber, ölçeğin ilk kısmında da Çevre Bilgisi (ÇB) testi bulunmaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında ilgili ölçek Türkiye'deki Erciyes Üniversitesi ve Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesinin Sosyal Bilgiler Öğretmenliği programında öğrenim gören toplam 401 öğretmen adayına uygulanmış, fakat Mahalanobis uzaklıkları hesaplanarak; uç değer gösteren 25 öğretmen adayı araştırmadan çıkartılmış ve çalışmaya 376 öğretmen adayı dahil edilmiştir. Çevre Okuryazarlığı ölçeği faktör analizine ve doğrulayıcı faktör analizine tabi tutulmuş ve güvenirlik katsayıları hesaplanmıştır. Ayrıca Çevre Bilgisi testinin de madde güçlük ve madde ayırt edicilik indeksleri ve güvenirlik katsayısı hesaplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistikler, Mann-Whitney U Testi ve Kruskal Wallis H Testi kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre öğretmen adaylarının çevre bilgileri ve çevre okuryazarlıkları ile Türkiye'de gerçekleştirilen çevre eğitiminin çevre okuryazarı birey yetiştirdiğini düşünme durumu arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklar bulunmuştur. Ayrıca öğretmen adaylarının çevre okuryazarlıkları ile cinsiyetleri arasında kadın öğretmen adaylarının lehine istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular ışığında, Türkiye'de eğitim programları kapsamında gerçekleştirilen çevre eğitiminin, çevre okuryazarı bireyler yetiştirdiğini düşünme durumunda başka araştırmacı veya uzmanlar tarafından bu durumun etkenlerinin ve sebeplerinin detaylı şekilde tespit edilmesi adına çalışmalar gerçekleştirilmesi gerektiği gibi önerilerde bulunulmuş ve bunlara ek olarak da diğer araştırmacılara ve yetkili mercilere de çeşitli öneriler sunulmuştur. Over the years, various methods have been created in the solution of environmental problems, the concept of environmental education, which especially started with the Tbilisi Conference, has shown its importance in the fight against environmental problems. It has been emphasized in the literature that the main purpose of environmental education for a sustainable environment is to raise environmentally literate individuals. In this context, there is a vital importance, in raising future generations as environmentally literate individuals, this responsibility falls on the shoulders of teachers. Because the construction of future generations is the duty of teachers. In order to carry out this responsibility, teachers and pre-service teachers, from education faculties to the schools where they work, must first be environmentally literate individuals themselves. In this case, the aim of the study is to examine the environmental literacy of social studies pre-service teachers in a versatile way. For this purpose, the descriptive survey model was used in the study and the collected quantitative data were analyzed. In order to investigate the environmental literacy levels of teacher candidates, a 4-dimensional scale developed by Kaplowitz ve Levine (2005) and adapted by Teksöz, Şahin, and Ertepınar (2010) according to Turkish and Turkish conditions was used in this study. Scale; while it consists of Attitude Towards Environment (ATE), Environmentally Related Use (ERU) and Concern for Environmental Issues (CEI) sub-dimensions, there is an Environmental Knowledge (EK) test in the first part of the scale. Within the scope of the research, the relevant scale was applied to a total of 401 pre-service teachers studying in the Social Studies Teaching program of Erciyes University and Süleyman Demirel University in Turkey, however by calculating the Mahalanobis distances; 25 pre-service teachers with extreme values were excluded from the study and 376 pre-service teachers were included in the study. Environmental Literacy scale was subjected to factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability coefficients were calculated. In addition, item difficulty and item discrimination indexes and reliability coefficients of the Environmental Knowledge test were calculated. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis H Test were used in the analysis of the data. According to the results obtained, statistically significant differences were found between the environmental knowledge and environmental literacy of pre-service teachers and the state of thinking that environmental education in Turkey raises environmental literate individuals. In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between the environmental literacy of pre-service teachers and their gender in favor of female teacher candidates. In the light of the findings, suggestions have been made that studies should be carried out by other researchers or experts in order to determine the factors and causes of this situation in detail, in case the environmental education carried out within the scope of education programs in Turkey raises environmentally literate individuals. In addition to these, various suggestions were presented to other researchers and authorities.
