Tez çalışmasının konusu, 18. Yüzyıl'ın önemli İngiliz filozof ve devlet adamlarından biri olarak kabul edilen Anthony Ashley Cooper Shaftesbury'nin (3. Shaftesbury Kontu) ahlak ve estetik üzerine ortaya koyduğu felsefi düşüncelerinin incelenmesidir. Filozof, felsefe, politika ve kültür alanındaki düşünceleri ve yaptığı katkılarla 18. ve 19. yüzyılda ülkesi ve Avrupa'da önemli düşünürler arasında yer almıştır. Shaftesbury, yaşadığı dönemde İngiliz ahlak felsefesi ve düşünce ortamına hâkim olan ve insan doğasını negatif bir şekilde mahkûm eden Hobbes'un egoizmi, Kalvinist, Puritanist paradigmalar ile Locke'un rölativizmine, Voluntarist ve Mekanist dünya görüşlerine karşı durmuştur. Antik dünyadan beslenen ve pozitif bir yaklaşımla kurguladığı insan dostu felsefesiyle gerçek iyi insan doğasını savunmuştur. Shaftesbury'nin Ahlak ve estetik görüşünün başlıca kaynakları antik Yunan ve Roma düşüncesi, Yeni Platonculuk, Stoa geleneği ve Cambridge Platoncuları'dır. Filozof, İngiliz ahlak felsefesi tarihinde bir dönüm noktası olarak kabul edilmektedir. Sanata olan yoğun ilgisi ve aristokrat kişiliğinin de bir yansıması olarak İngiliz ahlak düşüncesine estetik karakterli ahlak duyusu (moral sense) kavramını kazandırmıştır. Shaftesbury, Ahlak Duyusu Okulunun (Moral Sense School) kurucusu olarak kabul edilmektedir. Daha sonra bu okul Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, Adam Smith ve Joseph Butler gibi düşünürlerin katkılarıyla çağının en önemli ahlak okullarından birine dönüşmüştür. Felsefi estetik henüz bir disiplin olarak kurulmadan önce, estetik deneyimin merkezi kavramlarından olan çıkarsızlık ve yüce'yi ele alarak bu alanda Britanya ve Avrupa'da önemli düşünürlere öncülük etmiştir. Filozofun en büyük gayelerinden biri antik güzellik ideali ile düşünce özgürlüğünün kendi döneminde yeniden diriltilmesi ve Platonik Eros doktrininin orijinal gücünün modern zamanlarda yeniden ortaya konulmasıdır. The subject of the thesis is the examination of Anthony Ashley Cooper Shaftesbury's (3rd Earl of Shaftesbury) philosophical thoughts on morality and aesthetics who is accepted as one of the important English philosophers and statesmen of the 18th century. The philosopher was among the important thinkers in his country and Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries with his thoughts and contributions in the fields of philosophy, politics and culture. During his lifetime, Shaftesbury stood out against Hobbes' egoism, Calvinist and Puritanist paradigms, Locke's relativism, Voluntarist and Mechanist worldviews which dominated the English moral philosophy and thought environment and condemned human nature in a negative way. He defended the true good human nature with his human-friendly philosophy which was originated from the ancient world and built with a positive approach. The main sources of Shaftesbury's moral and aesthetic view are ancient Greek and Roman thought, Neoplatonism, the Stoic tradition, and the Cambridge Platonists. The philosopher is regarded as a turning point in the history of English moral philosophy. As a reflection of his intense interest in art and his aristocratic personality, he brought the concept of moral sense which also has an aesthetic character to English moral thought. Shaftesbury is credited as the founder of the Moral Sense School. Later, this school turned into one of the most important moral schools of its age with the contributions of thinkers such as Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, Adam Smith and Joseph Butler. Before philosophical aesthetics was established as a discipline, He pioneered important thinkers in Britain and Europe by addressing the central concepts of aesthetic experience, disinterestedness and sublime. One of the greatest goals of the philosopher is to resurrect the ancient ideal of beauty and freedom of thought in his own time and to reintroduce the original power of the Platonic Eros doctrine in modern times.
