İslâm felsefesinin önemli düşünürlerinden "Muallim-i Sâni" olarak anılan Fârâbi, devrinin önemli ilim merkezlerinde bulunmuş ve döneminin en önemli şahsiyetlerinden dersler almıştır. O, kendisinden önceki felsefî birikimi elde etmiş ve bu anlamda kendisinden sonraki düşünürlere öncülük etmiştir. Fârâbi, kendisinden önceki felsefî birikime ulaşmakla beraber bu birikimi var olduğu haliyle ele almamış, birçok fikre açıklık getirmiş, düzeltmeler yapmış, daha önce çözüme kavuşmamış pek çok meseleyi de yine çözüme kavuşturmuş ve felsefî sistemini bu anlamda yeni kavram ve mefhumlar ile zenginleştirmiştir. Fârâbî, tamamen aklî, metafizik, mücerret ve mantıkî düşünce üzerine bina edilen felsefî bir sistem kuran filozof olarak İslâm felsefî düşünce geleneğinde önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu anlamda İslâm düşüncesinde "varlık" kavramını ele alan ve değerlendiren ilk kişi olarak önemli bir yer teşkil etmektedir. Varlığı temelde zorunlu ve mümkün olarak ikiye ayırması ve ardından varlıklarda, varlık ve mâhiyet ayrımını esas alması, bu meseleyi yeni kavramlar ile zenginleştirmesi, bunun yanında varlık ve mâhiyet ayrımını mümkün varlıklarla sınırlaması kendisinden sonraki filozofların bu ayrım ile Allah'ın varlığına ve birliğine yol bulmak ve ilm-i ilâhîyi temellendirme konusunda temel dayanak noktaları olmuştur. Bu çalışma, Fârâbî'nin vücûd ve mâhiyet tefrikine ilişkin görüşlerini incelemeyi bu minvalde hem İslâm düşünce geleneğine ve hem de Batı düşüncesine bu meselede yapmış olduğu katkıyı ve tesirini ortaya koymayı hedeflemektedir. Al-Farabi – also known as 'Muallim-i Sani', one of the influential mutefekkirs of Islamic philosophy, had been to important çenters of science and been educated by the most important contempory scientists. He acquired the previous philosophical knowledge and in this context he guided the following philosophers. He not only acquired the previous knowledge but also didn't handle it as it was; he enlightened and edited it, solved many problems that hadn't been found solutions before, enriched the the philosophical system with new ideas and concepts. He is known as the philosopher who established a philosophical system which was founded on totally logical, metaphysical, abstract and rational ideas. Namely, he played an important role in being the first person to handle and evaluate the notion of 'existence' in Islamic philosophy. He divided the existence in two groups as 'necessary' and 'possible' and later he prioritized the differentation of 'existence' and ' quiddity' and he enriched the issue with new concepts. In addition to this, he limited the differentation of 'existence' and 'quiddity' with possible existences. Thanks to all this endeavors, he leaded the future philosophers to find their way to the existence and unity of God and to ground the divine knowledge. This study aims to examine the ideas of Farabi about the issue of 'existence' and 'quiddity' and his contribution and effect to both Islamic and Western philosophy.
