Bu çalışmanın amacı; İngiliz kadın seyyahlardan Annie Jane Tennant Harvey'in 1871 yılında kaleme aldığı Türk Haremleri ve Çerkez Evleri adlı eseri ile Lucy Mary Jane Garnett'in 1909'da yayımlanan Türkiye'de Aile Hayatı adlı seyahatnamesinde, Osmanlı toplumunun nasıl tasvir ve tahlil edildiğini ortaya koymaktır. Türkçe tercümesi olmayan bu iki seyahatnamenin Türk kültür camiasına tanıtılması hedeflenmektedir. 19. yüzyıl Batı seyahatnameleri açısından oldukça verimli bir dönem olmuştur. Batılı kadın gezginlerin bu dönemdeki katkıları, o zamana dek süregelen olumsuz "Türk" imajının değişmesini ve daha tarafsız bir hal almasını sağlamıştır.Çalışma dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde Batılı kadın gezginlerin gözüyle yeniden şekillenen Türk imgelerine yer verilmiştir. İkinci bölüm; Osmanlı toplumundaki kadın, erkek ve çocukların sosyal yaşantılarını kapsar. Üçüncü bölümde, devletin toplumsal kurumları ve bu kurumların yapısı incelenmiş, son bölümde de Osmanlı gelenekleri hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Bu değerlendirme yapılırken gezi edebiyatının vazgeçilmez unsuru olan imgebilimsel yöntemden yararlanılmıştır. Gizli Oryantalist söylemlerin kurgusu, söylem analizi yoluyla ifşa edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular diğer kadın seyyahların söylemleri ile desteklenmiştir.Sonuç olarak; Harvey ve Garnett'in yorumuyla şekillenen Osmanlı toplumundaki gündelik hayat, birçok açıdan Batı'ya örnek teşkil edebilecek bir yapıya sahiptir. Osmanlıdaki toplumsal hayata tam olarak dahil olabilen bu İngiliz kadın seyyahların tasvir ettiği Osmanlı toplumu ana hatlarıyla; kadına, çocuğa ve yaşlıya değer veren, insanların refahını sağlayan, toplumsal birlik ile yardımlaşmanın olduğu ve eğitimin desteklendiği geleneksel bir temel üzerine kurulmuştur. The aim of the present study is to reveal how Ottoman women were described and analysed in Turkish Harems and Circassian Homes penned by an English woman traveller Annie Jane Tennant Harvey in 1871, and Home Life in Turkey by Lucy Mary Jane Garnett, another travel book published in 1909. Our aim is to introduce these two travel books that have not been translated into Turkish yet to Turkish cultural community. The 19th century has been known as a highly productive period in terms of Western travel books. The contributions of Western women travellers in this period pave the way for a change in the well-established unfavourable "Turk" image in a more unbiased way.The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the Turk image reshaped through the lens of Western women travellers. The second chapter deals with the social lives of women, men, and children in the Ottoman society. The third chapter examines social institutions and their structures, and the last one is devoted to the Ottoman tradition. Throughout the process, imagological method, an indispensable element of travel literature is utilized. The fiction of implicit Orientalist discourse is uncovered by means of discourse analysis. The findings obtained are supported by the discourse of the other women travellers.In conclusion, the daily life in the Ottoman society revived by Harvey and Garnett's perceptions has a structure that could be a model for the West in many respects. The Ottoman society described by these two English women travellers who could succeed in integrating themselves into the social life is generally based on a traditional structure, in which women, children, and the elderly are valued. It also preserves individuals' welfare, appreciates social union and charity, and promotes education. Keywords: Travel book, women travellers, Orientalist, imagology, discourse analysis. |
