Görsel çalışmalar içinde oldukça geniş yer tutan fotoğraf, icadından günümüze kadar toplumun farklı alanlarında önemli işlevler üstlenmiş; kimi zaman sanat akımlarını yönlendirmiş, kimi zaman da toplumsal dönüşümlerde etkili olmuştur. Fotoğraf tarihi içerisinde toplumcu belgesel fotoğraf türleri, sosyal bilim araştırmalarında referans olmaktadır. Sosyal yaşamın birçok alanına ilişkin ve özellikle modernizmin yarattığı toplumsal problemlere odaklı bu tür fotoğraflar, görüntülerle çalışmayı amaçlayan sosyologlar için günümüzde temel kaynaklar olarak ele alınmaktadır. Dolayısıyla çalışma kapsamında, Birinci Bölümde, sosyolojik araştırma sürecinde sosyal olgu ve olayları kaydetme aracı ve bunları yorumlama vasıtalarından birisi olarak kullanılmasına ilişkin fikir ve düşüncelere dair veriler örneklerle ele alınmış ve sorgulanmaya çalışılmıştır. Sosyal hayatın keşfedilmesinde görsel imajlar dizisi aracılığı ile iletilen görüş ve değerlendirmelerin, çoğu kez kelimeler dizisi yoluyla bildirilenlerden daha az olmadığı gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır. Sosyolojik iletişim alanlarından birisi olarak görülen fotoğrafın, sosyolojik araştırma esnasında fonksiyonu, kullanımının artıları ve zorlukları açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. İkinci Bölümde ise tezin ağırlık noktasını oluşturan "toplumcu belgesel fotoğraf"ın etkin kullanım alanlarına değinilmiş ve belgesel fotoğrafın bir alt başlığı olan savaş fotoğraflarının, toplumsal olay ve problemleri yansıtmadaki işlevi üzerinde durulmuştur. Üçüncü Bölümde ise, 1992 Hocalı Katliamı Fotoğraflarıyla ele alınmıştır. Burada yerli ve yabancı basın fotoğrafçılarının kaydettiği fotoğraflar üzerinden ve tanıkların anlatımları da dikkate alınarak bir sorgulamaya gidilmiştir.

Photograph which is quite large used in visual studies, has assumed important functions in different areas of society from the day of its invention to the present; sometimes directed the artistic currents, and sometimes has been effective in social transformations. In the history of photography, socialist photo documentary has come to be reference for social sciences researches. Those types of photos, related to the various fields of social life and focused especially on the social problems instigated by modernism, have been deemed to be primary sources for sociologists aiming to study with images. Therefore, within the scope of this study, information on the ideas for the use of those images as a means of recording and interpreting the social phenomena and events in the process of sociological research has been given in the first chapter. And it has been tired to be proved that opinions and evaluations transmitted through the sequence of visual images for the exploration of social life have not been less than those transferred through the sequences of words. Also the cons and pros, and during sociologic research, the function of photograph seen as one of the sociologic communication areas have been explained. In the second chapter, the efficient fields of use of the "socialist documentary photography" that has constituted the main point of the thesis have been touched, and as a subtitle of documentary photography the function of war photos in reflecting social events and problems has been discussed. And in the last chapter the Khojaly Massacre of 1992 has been dealt with photographs. Here, through the photos taken by the local and foreign photographers and by the narratives of the witnesses the incidence has been questioned.
