İslâm düşüncesinde Tanrı fikrinden sonra vurgulanan en önemli doktrin, eskatoloji üzerine kurulmuş, literatürde genellikle ahiret ve meâd kavramıyla işlenmiştir. Fârâbî'nin meâd tasavvuru, keyfiyeti itibarıyla tamamen insan merkezli olduğundan onun psikoloji nazariyesini bu meseleden ayırmak mümkün değildir. X. Yüzyıl İslam dünyasına önceki dönemlerden intikal eden ruh ve ruhun eskatolojik durumuyla ilgili felsefî birikim, Fârâbî sisteminin arka planına dair önemli ipuçları vermektedir. Filozofun ruh, nefis, akıl tasavvurları, bunların birbiriyle ve bedenle olan ilişkileri, meleke ve fiilleri, yetkinleşme süreci, meâd fikrinin önemli unsurlarıdır. Fârâbî'ye göre, bedeniyle birlikte varlık kazanan ruhu sayesinde insan, aşkın-soyut âlemlere ve İlk'e (Tanrı'ya) doğru yükselen bir idrak fonksiyonuyla temayüz eder. Ruhun ölümsüzlüğü baştan verilmiş bir özellik olmayıp, onun entelektüel kısmını teşkil eden aklın, kuvve halinden bilfiil aktif hale gelerek ilk yetkinlik eşiğini geçmesiyle kazanılır. Kendisinde düşünme ve irade melekeleri bulunmayan kimsenin ruhu, beden desteği olmaksızın yaşama gücünü elde etmemiş demektir. Erdemli istidatlarla yetkinleşen ruhlar ebedî saadet içinde, kendini kötü istidatlarla biçimlendirmiş olanlar ise sürekli ızdırap içinde kalacaktır. Nihaî mutluluk, mükemmelleşmenin kendisidir. Fârâbî doktrininde, ruhun ölümden sonraki bekası ve mutluluğu insanın kendine ait duygu, düşünce ve davranışlarıyla oluştuğundan filozofun fert ve toplum olarak insana dair tasarlamış olduğu psiko-sosyal sistem doğrudan, doğal, zorunlu eskatolojik sonuçları bulunan ve dolayısıyla ontolojik olarak ahiretten bağımsız asla düşünemeyeceğimiz bilgi ve eylem alanlarından teşekkül etmiştir. The second most important doctrin questioned after the idea of God is based on eschatology and is associated with (discussed) the concepts of Mead or Ahiret (afterlife). Because Farabi's thought of mead is utterly anthropocentric by its nature, it is impossible to separate his theory of psychology from this issue. The philosophical heritage related to the soul and its eschatological state inherited by the Islamic World in the 10th century from previous ages gives significant hints as regards the background of Farabi's system. The philosopher's thoughts on the soul, the flesh (desire), mental thinking, their relationship to each other and the body, natural faculties and acts and maturity process are the important factors of the idea of mead. According to Farabi, human being, thanks to his soul which comes into existence with the body, comes to the fore through a mental struggle to reach God and transcendal-spiritual world. The immortality of the soul is not a quality granted in the very beginning; it is not inherent. Immortality is gained after the reason, which is the intellectual part of the soul, comes into action, going beyond the threshold of maturity. The soul of a person who does not have the natural faculties of will or thinking may be said not to have gained the power to live without the support of the body. While souls which mature through virtuous talents will remain in eternal happines, those which are shaped through vicious talents will remain in lasting suffering. Ultimate happiness is nothing but perfection. In Farabi's doctrine, because the perpetuity and happiness of the soul after death comes into existence through a human being's emotions, thoughts and behaviours, the psycho-social system which the philosopher designed for man as an individual and a society is composed of knowledge and action fields which, ontologically, cannot be regarded as independent from the afterlife.
