dc.description
he current situations and new opportunities for extreme cold protective clothing (CPC) are introduced starting from materials and structures used for basic three layers to novel smart structures and finishing treatments. Quality standards and sustainability issues are also discussed. Besides the introduction of functional fibers, fabric structures and finishing treatments, natural and synthetic insulation materials such as animal fibers and aerogels, infrared radiation managing, and photothermal converting heating/cooling structures are introduced as smart structures for CPC. Conductive structures such as joule heating and thermoelectric devices which can adapt to environmental changes to manage body thermal neutrality are introduced as future trends of CPC. Moreover, phase change materials and shape memory polymers are mentioned for thermal comfort enhancement under dynamic conditions as cooling and sweat removal is still crucial under cold. The mentioned applications are thought to be used in different areas with protection/health, comfort, and sustainability criteria.
