19. yüzyıl insanlık tarihinin değişim olgusuyla hızlı ve derinden yüzleştiği bir dönem olmuştur. Avrupa'da başlayan bu değişim, tüm ülkeleri az ya da çok etkisi altına almıştır. Söz konusu değişimler karşısında büyük bir imparatorluk olan Osmanlı, reflektif bir hareket olarak elindekini muhafaza etmeye yönelmiş, bu muhafazakâr anlayış toplumun her alanında -sosyal, siyasal, kültürel, dini, ekonomik- içe kapanmaya neden olmuştur. Batınî yorum ve anlayışlar ön plana çıkmış; pasif-zahit zihniyet oluşmuştur. Bu zihniyetin yansımaları Cumhuriyet devriminden sonra da devam etmiş ve günümüze kadar evrilerek süregelmiştir. Türk toplumunu ileri taşıyan ya da geri bırakan unsurları zihniyet perspektifinden anlama ve açıklamaya çalışan Ülgener, din-iktisat ilişkileri merkezinde, çöküş döneminin ahlak dünyası ile iktisat zihniyetinin arasında kurduğu bağlantılarla ve Osmanlı zihniyeti üzerine yaptığı tespitlerle modern Türkiye'nin rasyonel bir ekonomi anlayışına sahip olamamasının ve zihniyet değişiminde zorlanmasının nedenlerini ortaya koymuş bilim insanlarımızdan biridir. Bu çalışmada, Ülgener'in Osmanlı-Türk toplumu özelinde başlayıp Doğu toplumlarını ve Türk toplumunun Cumhuriyet'e geçiş sürecini kapsayan, karşılaştırmalı yaklaşımı neticesinde Batı toplumlarını da içeren özgün yorum ve tespitleri, deskripsiyon yöntemiyle çeşitli başlıklar altında din, değişim ve zihniyetle ilişkilendirilerek ele alınmıştır. The 19th century was a period in human history when humanity faced the phenomenon of change rapidly and profoundly. This change, which started in Europe, affected all countries to a greater or lesser extent. In the face of these changes, the Ottoman Empire, which was a great empire, tended to preserve what it had as a reflexive movement, and this conservative understanding led to introversion in all areas of society social, political, cultural, religious, economic. Esoteric interpretations and understandings came to the forefront; a passive-ascetic mentality emerged. The reflections of this mentality continued after the Republican revolution and have continued to evolve until today. Ülgener, who tried to understand and explain the elements that moved Turkish society forward or left it backward from the perspective of mentality. He revealed the reasons why modern Turkey could not have a rational understanding of economy and had difficulty in changing its mentality with the connections he established between the moral world of the decadence period and the economic mentality in the center of religion-economics relations and with his determinations on the Ottoman mentality. In this study, Ülgener's original interpretations and determinations, starting with the Ottoman-Turkish society, covering Eastern societies and the transition process of Turkish society to the Republic, including Western societies as a result of his comparative approach, are discussed under various headings by associating them with religion, change and mentality through deskripsion method.
