dc.description Allantoin has been widely cited in literature that it has a lot of effects. These are: wound healing, anti-irritating, hydrating and remover of the necrotic tissue, stimulating the cell mitosis, as well as promoter of epithelial stimulation, analgesic action and keratolytic activity. There fore, it is often used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Allantoin is used in many regions such as skin and oral mucosa but there was no study in the literature that it is used in the nasal mucosa. In this study we investigate the effect of allantoin on wound healing in the nasal mucosa. We aimed to find a new solution that can used in both nasal packing materials and nasal washing solutions. The nasal mucosal injury can occur for many reasons such as surgery. For this reason we planned to find an agent that can prevent recurrence in patients who underwent surgery, increase the success of surgery and increase patients comfort. In this study, 36 young adult white Sprague Dawley rats weighing between 240-350 gram were used. A unilateral wound (right) in the nasal mucosa was injured using the brushing technique. The animals were randomly divided into six groups. The first there grups were sakrificed in day seven (control, distilled water, allantoin). The second three grups were sacrificed in day 21th (control, distilled water, allantoin).Biopsy specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson-Trichrome. The results were evaluated according to the histopathological scoring results.According to the histopathological scale, the groups of the first week were compared and the results of goblet cell hyperplasia, inflammation, loss of cilia, fibrosis and squamous metaplasia were not significantly different.According to the histopathological scale, on first week the results of edema and congestion were statistically significant (p=0.05 ve p=0.005).According to the histopathological scale, the groups of the third week were compared and the results of goblet cell hyperplasia, inflammation, loss of cilia, and squamous metaplasia were not significantly different. But on third week the results of edema congestion and fibrosis were statistically significant (p=0.005, p=0.027 and p=0,022).Considering the above results, it can be concluded that allantoin could accelerate nasal mucosal healing and increase the postoperative success. Keywords : Allantoin, nasal mucosa, wound healing.
