İnsanoğlunun ilk çağlardan itibaren iklim şartları gibi çevresel faktörlerden korunma ihtiyacıyla keşfettiği örtünme araçları, tarih boyunca dönüşüme uğrayıp birçok farklı amaca hizmet eden, insanın içinde bulunduğu döneme, coğrafyaya, inanış biçimine, cinsiyet ve toplumsal statüsüne göre değişen göstergeler barındıran bir iletişim aracı haline gelmiştir. Örtünme ve yaşamsal ihtiyaçlarını karşılama çabasında birçok ritüel gerçekleştiren ilk insanlar, tiyatronun öğelerini bu ritüellerle oluştururken, gösteri sanatlarının da tarihsel sürecini başlatmış olur. Aynı zamanda tiyatro ve sinemanın anlatım araçlarından biri olan kostümün tarihsel süreci de bu ritüellerle birlikte başlar. Önceleri hayvan postu ve maskesini ritüelin amacına hizmet eden bir forma getirerek kullanan insan, dram sanatını geliştirmesine eşzamanlı olarak kostümü bir tasarım öğesi haline getirir. Antik çağlardan itibaren, içinde bulunulan dönemin günlük giyim alışkanlıkları çerçevesinde bir görünüme sahip olan sahne kostümü kendisinden önceki dönemde yazılmış, ya da tarihsel konuları olan güncel oyunlarda o dönemin giyim özelliklerini yansıtmaya başlamasıyla birlikte tarihsel nitelik kazanır. Önceki toplumların giyim stillerinin bilinir olmaya başlamasıyla birlikte tarihsel doğruluğu olan kostümler tasarım anlamında da değer kazanır ve tiyatroda kullanılmaya başlanır. Sinemanın insan hayatına girişiyle birlikte tarihsel filmlerin izleyici tarafından ilgiyle karşılanması, tarihsel kostümün yeni kullanım alanları bulmasıyla birlikte üretiminde yeni yaklaşımları doğurur. Bu çalışmanın birinci bölümünde de tiyatro ve sinemada tarihsel kostümün gelişim süreci araştırılmıştır. İkinci bölümünde ise günümüzdeki yaratım imkânları çerçevesinde tarihsel kostüm yapımında, tasarımsal yaklaşımlar ve üretim aşamasında başvurulan teknik bilgilere yer verilmiştir. Humans discovered clothing materials to protect themselves from environmental factors such as climatic conditions since the first ages. According to the period, geography, belief, gender it becomes a communication tool that contains indicators that change according to social status. He was the first to perform many rituals in an effort to cover himself and meet his vital needs. While people create the elements of the theater with these rituals, the historical aspects of the performing arts are also initiates the process. It is also one of the means of expression of theater and cinema. The historical process of the costume begins with these rituals. Animal skin and mask, the person who uses them by bringing it into a form that serves the purpose of the ritual helps him to develop the art of drama, simultaneously making the costume a design element. From ancient times in the scene, which has an appearance within the framework of the daily clothing habits of the current period his costume is in current plays written in the previous period or with historical themes. It gains a historical character as it begins to reflect the clothing characteristics of that period. With the clothing styles of previous societies becoming known, their historical accuracy the costumes, which are the most popular, gain value in terms of design and begin to be used in the theater. With the introduction of cinema into human life, historical films have been seen with great interest by the audience. So that the historical costume finds new areas of use and generates different approaches. The first part of the study includes the historical studies of the theater, cinema and the development process of the costume. In the last part of the study explains, today's creative possibilities in historical costume making, design approaches and production phase referenced technical information.
