Ekoloji, 19. yüzyılda ilk olarak hayvan türlerinin organik ve inorganik çevre ile olan ilişkilerini inceleyen bir bilim dalı olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Bugün ise ekoloji; sosyoloji, antropoloji, ekonomi, siyaset bilimi, tarih ve sanat gibi diğer dallarla ortak çalışan, daha kapsayıcı bir şekilde, sadece hayvanların değil; bütün canlıların çevreleri ile olan karşılıklı ilişkilerini inceleyen disiplinler arası bir alandır. Edebiyat ile çevre, ekoloji ile kültür arasındaki ilişkileri ortaya koyan bir çalışma alanı olan ekoeleştiri, ekolojinin disiplinler arası alana açıldığı çalışma alanlarından biridir. Ekoeleştiri, tarihsel süreç içerisinde birbirinden ayrı olarak düşünülen kültür ve doğa kavramlarını bir araya getirerek sosyo-politik ve ekonomik bağlamlarda çözümlemeler yapar. Ekolojik problemler, yalnızca çevresel kirlilikle sınırlı değildir; aynı zamanda toplumsal adaletsizlikleri, savaşları, sömürüyü ve tahakkümü de içerisine alır. İki ana bölümden oluşan çalışmanın birinci bölümünde, ekoloji ve ekoeleştiri incelenmektedir. Ardından tiyatro sanatındaki ekoloji yaklaşımlarına değinilerek, tiyatro ile ekoloji arasındaki bağlar irdelenmektedir. Ekolojiyi sanat kuramlarıyla bir araya getiren ekoeleştiri, çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde Bertolt Brecht'in epik tiyatro kuramını değerlendirmek için kullanılmaktadır. Epik tiyatro kuramı, bilimsel ve sanatsal yöntemlerin iç içe olduğu bir uygulama alanıdır. Toplumu bir ekosistem olarak ele alan ekoeleştiriden hareketle, epik tiyatro kuramı, bu ekosistem içerisindeki işleyişin aksayan yönlerini ortaya çıkarmaya çalışır. Ezen-ezilen, sömüren-sömürülen ilişkisini; sosyal, tarihsel, politik ve kültürel olarak ele alan epik tiyatro kuramı, ekoeleştiri perspektifinden, insanın insanla kurduğu ilişki üzerinden, insanın doğa ile kurduğu ilişkiye atıf yapar. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde, epik tiyatro kuramı açıklanmakta, ardından epik tiyatronun dili, yapısı, kullandığı yöntemleri ve oyunları ekoeleştiri kuramı aracılığıyla kapsamlı olarak değerlendirilmektedir. In 19th century, ecology has first emerged as a field of science which examines the relations between animal species and organic and inorganic environment. Today, in turn, ecology is an interdisciplinary field which collaborates with other fields such as sociology, anthropology, economy, political sciences, history and arts; and on a more broad basis, studies not only the relations between animals and their environments but also the relations between all the living species and their environment. Portraying the relations between literature and environment, ecology and culture, a field of study, ecocriticism, is one of the fields of study which lead the way of ecology into interdisciplinary basis. Gathering the concepts of culture and nature -which have been considered independent to one another in the historical process- together, ecocriticism offers analyses within sociopolitical and economic contexts. Ecological issues are not solely restrained to environmental pollution, yet, they embody social injustice, wars, exploitation and domination as well. The first chapter of the study, which is composed of two major chapters, scrutinizes ecology and ecocriticism. Then, the study addresses to the relations between theatre and ecology through mentioning ecological approaches in the art of theatre. Gathering ecology and art theories together, ecocriticism, is used for elaborating on the theory of epic theatre by Bertolt Brecht, in the second chapter of the study. The theory is an area of application in which scientific and artistic methods and techniques are engaged with one another. The theory of epic theatre attempts to uncover the halting aspects of the progress within this ecosystem, based on ecocriticism, that perceives society as an ecosystem. The theory of epic theatre that approaches the oppressor-oppressed, the exploiter-exploited relationships on a social, historical, political and cultural basis; from an ecocritical perspective, refers to the relation which humanbeings form with the nature, through the relationship humanbeings form with one another. The second chapter of the study interprets the theory of epic theatre, then, approaches the language, structure, methods and plays of epic theatre thoroughly, through the theory of ecocriticism.
