Türkler bilinen iki bin beş yüz yıllık tarihleri boyunca çeşitli inanç sistemlerine intisap etmişler ve bu katılımlar onların sosyal yaşamından siyasi yaşamına kadar birçok alanda belirgin değişimlerin yaşanmasına neden olmuştur. Her şeyden önce Türk toplumunun kendine has bir yaşam tarzı ve dünya görüşü bulunmaktadır. Türkler tabiatla konargöçer yaşam tarzının beraberinde getirdiği ya da belki mecbur kıldığı muazzam bir uyuma sahiptir. Bu nedenle, Türklerin arkaik inanç sistemlerinde, kozmogonilerin de eskatolojik inanışlarında doğanın bir toplum üzerindeki en saf etkilerine şahit olunur. Türk toplum yapısı ve devlet tasavvuru da göksel evrenin değişmez döngüsü ile benzer nitelikler taşımaktadır. Yurdun (evin) bozkıra açılan kapısı daima doğu yönüne bakar. Tüm tabiat varlıkları gibi Türkler de yüzünü göğün merkezinde olan güneşe döner. Gök, aynı zamanda Tanrı ile özdeştir. Nasıl ki evrende her öge bir kaide üzerine hareket ediyorsa, Türklerde devlet de o nizam ile hareket etmelidir. Türklerde hükümdar toplumun merkezindedir ve her birey yüzünü ona doğru döner. Kağan, göksel kudretin yeryüzünde vücut bulmuş halidir ve bu suretle halkına buyruk olur. Hükümdar kut sahibidir. Bu ona Tanrı'nın yani göğün nizamını yer yüzünde hâkim kılma yetkisi ve sorumluluğu verir. Aksi durumda kut bahşedildiği gibi kolaylıkla elden de çıkabilir. Kut'unu yitiren ve yer yüzünde adaleti sağlayamayan bir Kağan dünyevi iktidarını da kaybetmiş olur. Bu devlet tasavvuru, Türklerde gerçek dünya ile tinsel (zahiri) dünya arasında bulunan sıkı bağı ortaya koyar. Bir başka deyişle hükümdarın meşruiyeti ve hakimiyetin ilahi kaynağı zahiridir. Bu anlayış istisnasız bir biçimde Türklerin intisap ettiği her inanç sisteminde kendisini hissettirir. Türklerin tarih boyunca benimsedikleri dinler, ister geleneksel isterse de evrensel olsun, bu söz konusu dünya ve zahiri görüşün yeniden yorumlanması ve pratik ihtiyaçların teminine matuf süreçlerin yaşanması ile açıklanabilir. Türkler mutlak yaratıcı olan Tanrı'ya giden farklı seçenekleri deneyimlerken kendi inanç yapılarını muhafaza etmişler bunun yanında da bir takım siyasi, ekonomik ve kültürel gerekçeler çerçevesinde yeni dinlerin inananları haline gelmişlerdir. Ancak intisap edilen dinler Türklerde bir benlik erozyonuna yol açmamış, aksine kabul edilen her dinin Türklerin hayat tarzına, doğayı ve evreni anlamlandırma biçimlerine göre yeniden uyarlanması, kültürel anlamda bir sentez oluşmasına katkı sağlamıştır. Throughout their known 2,500-year history, Turks have embraced various belief systems, and these participations have led to significant changes in many areas, from their social life to their political life. First and foremost, the Turkish society has a unique lifestyle and worldview. Turks have an incredible harmony with nature that comes with their nomadic lifestyle, or perhaps, it forces them to do so. Therefore, in the archaic belief systems of the Turks, one can witness the purest effects of nature on a society in their cosmogonies and eschatological beliefs. The Turkish social structure and state concept also have similar qualities to the immutable cycle of the celestial universe. The gate of the yurt (house of Turks) that opens to the steppe always faces the east. Like all natural beings, Turks also turn their faces towards the sun, which is at the center of the sky. The sky is also identical with God. Just as every element in the universe moves according to a rule, the state in Turks should also move with that order. In Turks, the ruler is at the center of society, and every individual turns towards him. The Khagan is the embodiment of the celestial power on earth and thus commands his people. The ruler is the bearer of kut. This gives him the authority and responsibility to establish God's order, which is the order of the sky, on earth. Otherwise, kut can easily be lost as it is granted. A Khagan who loses his kut and cannot provide justice on earth also loses his earthly power. This state concept reveals the strong connection between the real world and the spiritual (apparent) world in Turks. In other words, the legitimacy of the ruler and the divine source of his sovereignty are apparent. This understanding is felt in every belief system that Turks have adopted without exception. The religions adopted by Turks throughout history, whether traditional or universal, can be explained by the reinterpretation of this world and the apparent view and the practical processes for meeting needs. While experiencing different options to reach the absolute creator, God, Turks have preserved their own belief structures and at the same time, they have become believers of new religions within the framework of some political, economic, and cultural reasons. However, the religions embraced have not caused a erosion of identity in Turks; on the contrary, the adaptation of every accepted religion according to the way Turks understand their way of life, nature, and the universe has contributed to the formation of a cultural synthesis.
