Kent meydanları, bulundukları alanın merkezinde konumlanan, estetik ve işlevsel açıdan birçok özelliğe sahip mekânlardır. Meydan biçiminde ortaya çıkan ilk kentsel açık mekânlar, kentin kültürünü yansıtmakta olup geçmiş ve geleceği arasında bağlantı kuran kültürel ortamlardır. Meydanlar, her kentin hatta her ülkenin doğal, kültürel, sosyal ve ekonomik özelliklerine göre farklı içerik ve fonksiyonlara sahiptir. Nüfus ve teknolojide görülen değişimler kentsel mekânlara da yansımış, bunun sonucu olarak meydanların, fonksiyonel ve fiziksel özelliklerinin farklılaşmalar gözlemlenmiştir. Osmanlı döneminden itibaren tarihi geçmişlerinde şehirlerin önemli unsurlarından olmuşlar, günümüz Türkiye'sinde ise yeni kentleşme akımları, kentsel dönüşüm ihtiyaçları ve toplumun açık mekânlardan olan beklentileri meydanlarda da etkisini göstermiş, kamusal mekânın yenilenmesi ve dönüşümünde meydanlar ilk akla gelen kent parçaları olmuştur. Bu çalışmada; kentsel açık mekânlardan biri olan meydanların kentlerdeki konumları, fonksiyonları, formları, donatıları, tarihi, geçmiş ile günümüz arasındaki farklılıkları ve kent yaşamına katkıları, planlama ve tasarım ilkeleri belirlenmiş, gerekli sınıflandırma ve ilkelendirmeler yapılmıştır. Sultanahmet Meydanı tarihsel süreç kapsamında ele alınarak, mekânsal öğeleri açısından sörvey, gözlem ve literatür araştırmaları ile incelenmiştir. Elde edilen verilere göre Sultanahmet Meydanı'nın bir meydan olarak sorunları, eksikleri ve planlama hataları saptanmıştır. Peyzaj Mimarisi bakış açısıyla bu sorunlara çözümlemeler getirilerek Sultanahmet Meydanı'nın ihtiyacı olan, gerekli planlama ve tasarım aşamaları belirlenmiştir. City squares are situated at the center of city or area they are in, have lots of features in terms of aesthetic and functional. Primary urban open spaces that come out in the form of square, to be reflecting the culture of the city that making contact with past and the future, are cultural spaces. Squares have became important events that have been lived at the history and in the city. Squares that take part in urban open spaces, have different structures and functions according to natural, cultural, social and economical characteristics of every country and of every city. Changes in social, economical and cultural values, also at population and technology can be observed in urban places. From the beggining of the Ottoman history, squares have become important elements of cities in Turkey. New Urbanism in Contemporary Turkey, open spaces in urban regeneration needs and expectations of society has shown its impact in the squares, the renewal of public space and the transformation of urban spaces, squares were the first that comes to mind. In this study; the locations, functions, forms, equipments, history, differences between past and present and contributions to urban life, planning and design principles have been determined and necessary classification and prin- ciples have been made. The Sultanahmet Square was examined in the context of historical process and investigated by means of survey, observation and literature in terms of spatial elements. According to the obtained results, the Sultanahmet Square as a square, the problems, the missing and the planning mistakes were determined. With the perspective of Landscape Architecture, these problems have been solved and necessary planning and design phases of Sultanahmet Square have been determined.
