Bu çalışmanın birinci amacı, süreç filozofu Alfred North Whitehead'in Medeniyet teorisini ortaya koymaktır. İkinci olarak ise günümüzün temel problemlerinden olan medeniyet'i Whitehead'in medeniyet teorisi bağlamında incelemektir. Günümüzde 'medeniyetler çatışması', 'medeniyetler arası diyalog', 'medeniyetler ittifakı' gibi birçok medeniyet tartışmaları mevcuttur. Bu tartışmalar, bizim 'medeniyet' kavramı üzerinde yeniden düşünmemiz gerektiği sonucuna götürmüştür. Bu çalışmada 'medeniyet' kavramı, A. N. Whitehead'in felsefesi açısından incelenecektir. Whitehead (1861-1947), en önemli 20. yüzyıl filozoflarından biridir. O, açık sonun/geleceğin yaratıcı bir süreci olarak zamansal dünyanın gerçeklik ve önemini ve onun her yönden insanla yakın ilişkisini savunan .süreç felsefesi. kategorisi içerisinde yer alır. Modernite, insan tecrübelerinin birbirinden bağımsız ayrı kompartımanlar olduğunu iddia eder. Modernitenin aksine, Whitehead onların birbirinden bağımsız olmadığını olduğunu savunur. Ona göre her bir varlığın, diğer varlıkların varlığına ve gerçekleşmesine katkı sağlaması şeklinde her şey birbiriyle ilişkilidir. Süreç filozofu Whitehead'in fikirleri, hayatın birçok problemleri için zengin alternatif yaklaşımlar hazinesidir. Bununla birlikte, onun felsefi düşünceye en büyük katkısı, din, bilim, felsefe, etik, estetik gibi insan tecrübesinin farklı yönlerini.rasyonel ve tutarlı bir şema içinde uzlaştıran .bütüncül ilke. sunmasıdır. Ayrıca onun medeniyet görüşünün temelinde bu .bütüncül. ilke vardır. Medeniyet, insanlığın en büyük tecrübesidir. Bu tecrübenin temel taşı, insan fikirleridir. 'Fikirlerin serüvenleri'yle o, 'insanlığı medeniyete doğru yükselten belli fikirlerin etkisini' kastetmektedir. Whitehead'e göre medeniyet, 'medeni bir toplumun Doğruluk, Güzellik, Serüven, Sanat ve Barış niteliklerini sergilemesidir'. Bununla birlikte o, 'yeni mükemmellikler arama' olarak 'serüven'in medeniyeti koruma ve yükseltme için önemli olduğunu ileri sürmektedir. Sonuç olarak Whitehead'in medeniyet görüşü, ilişkililik ilkesi çerçevesinde geçmiş-şimdi-gelecek ve insan tecrübesinin bütün alanlarını içerdiği için 'bütüncül'dür. Bununla birlikte onun kozmolojisi, böyle bir medeniyet görüşü için destek sağlamaktadır. O, medeniyet teorisinde Batı medeniyetinin problemlerini ve onların çözümlerini ortaya koymaktadır. The first purpose of this study is to present process philosopher Alfred North Whitehead's Theory of Civilization. Its second purpose is to examine 'civilization' as one of today's basic problems in the context of Whitehead's theory of civilization.Today, there are many discussions of civilization such as `clash of civilizations', `dialogue among civilizations', `alliance of civilizations'. These discussions have led to the conclusion that we need to rethink the term `civilization'. In this study, the term `civilization' will be examined in terms of A. N. Whitehead's philosophy.Whitehead (1861-1947) is one of the most important twentieth century philosophers. He is in the category of 'process philosophy' that advocate the reality and the importance of the temporal world as a creative process of open ending (future) and its close relationship to human beings in every aspect.Modernity asserts that the human experiences are separate compartments which are independent from each other. Contrary to Modernity, Whitehead advocates that they are not independent from each other. According to him, everything is related to each other in a way that each being contributes to existence and the fulfillment of other beings.Process philosopher Whitehead's ideas are a rich treasury of alternative approaches to the many problems of life. However, his greatest contribution to philosophical thought is that he presents a 'holistic principle' which reconciles the diverse aspects of human experience -such as religion, science, philosophy, ethic, and aesthetic- into a rational and coherent scheme. Additionally, there is the `holistic' principle on the basis of Whitehead's view of civilization.Civilization is the greatest experience of humankind. The backbone of this experience is human ideas. Therefore, we will try to introduce Whitehead's theory of civilization in the context of the 'adventures of ideas'. Indeed, according to Whitehead 'adventures of ideas' constitute the basis of civilization. With 'adventures of ideas', he means that it is 'the effect of certain ideas in promoting the slow drift of mankind towards civilization'. For Whitehad, civilization is that 'a civilized society is exhibiting the five qualities of Truth, Beauty, Adventure, Art, and Peace'. However he maintains that 'adventure' as 'the search for new perfections' is important for the promotion and preservation of civilization.Consequently, Whitehead's view of civilization is holistic so that it involves all spheres of human experience and past-present-future within the framework of the principle of relatedness. Also his cosmology has provided the support for such a view of civilization. He presents the problems of Western civilization and their resolutions in his theory of civilization. In this way he offers a new and different model of civilization discussing the question of 'civilization' under the example of Western civilization.
