Bu araştırmanın temelinde, nezaketle hitap etme ve yüz kavramlarıyla ilişkisine dair güncel sorunların araştırılması prensibi yatmaktadır. Gerek Pragmatizmde gerek dil sosyolojisinde bu kavramların pek çok tanımı vardır. Bu tanımların analizi sonucunda ulaştığımız hususlar şunlardır: Nezaket ve yüz kavramlarının kimliği hipotetik yanları ve sağduyulu mantığa ek olarak, sınırlandırılmamalıdır. Ayrıca daha da dakik olunmalıdır. Bu araştırma, program açısından konuşma eylemindeki çeşitli tutumlar arasındaki ilişkiyi tartışmaktadır. Mesela, özür, talepler, övgüler… Nitekim, kişiler arasındaki karşılıklı hitaplar teşekkür, iyi niyetli yaklaşım, değer verme, önemseme, vb. görgü kurallarından kaynaklanır.

The principle motivation behind this paper is to consider some present issues in the study of linguistic politeness and its correlation to the notions of face, facework and face threatening. These notions have got innumerable distinctive definitions in pragmatics and sociolinguistics throughout the recent decades. What we arrive at as a result of examination of these definitions is: the notions of politeness and face ought not to be identified. Furthermore, the commonsense and hypothetical aspects of politeness also should be characterized more precisely. The paper, in terms of this approach discusses the relationship between distinctive kinds of conducts in speech acts, such as, apologies, requests, and compliments, since human discourse is always guided by the rules of politeness (e.g., thanks, friendly addresses and expressions of concern and appreciation etc.).
