Bu çalışma söylevde uyumun sürdürülmesinin önemini ele almaktadır. Önvarsayım dil teorisinde önemli bir yere sahip olmasına rağmen sistematik olarak ele alınmamıştır. Önvarsayım 20 yüzyılın ikinci yarısında ciddi bir şekilde ele alınmaya başlanmıştır. Önvarsayım ciddi olarak ele alınmaya başlandıktan sonra konteks duyarlılığının çok önemli bir unsuru olmuştur. Önvarsayım zamanı ve enerjiyi etkin kullanmada çok etkin bir araçtır. Bu çalışmada iletişim açısından önvarsayımların etkinliği cümle çözümlemeleriyle ele alınmıştır. Önvarsayım türleri verilmiştir. Metin organizasyonunda çok önemli olan önvarsayımların potansiyel gücü ortaya konulmuştur. Cümle organizasyonunda uyum önvarsayımlar ışığında incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma İngilizce metinlerde kelime bağlamındaki önvarsayımların çok önemli olduğuna işaret etmiştir. Bir metnin ekonomik ve etkin oluşturulmasında önvarsayımlar ve metin organizasyonun ne kadar önemli olduğunu da ortaya koymuştur.

This thesis studies presupposition as an important device for the maintenance of coherence in discourse. Though central to the theory of language, the phenomenon of presupposition did not become the subject of systematic study till the second half of the twentieth century. When it did, it quickly became one of the wedges that helped to prise open the hitherto intractable mysteries of context-sensitivity in language. Moreover, it is one of powerful devices for the saving (economizing) of time and energy. In this study, we'll investigate how presuppositional potential of sentences plays essential role in developmental aspect of communication. Types of presuppositions with their varying functions in text organization are among the major goal of the research. The textual communication helps to build ground depending on the assumption that all ideas are hanged together (coherence). Result indicates that English texts rely heavily on existential and lexical presuppositions as well as lexical and personal reference cohesion which contribute effectively in economoizing the text as well as estiblishing its continuity.
