Bu tezin amacı, Leila Aboulela'nın Minare adlı romanında Butler'ın cinsel kimlik, edim ve edimselik terimlerini incelemektir. Roman, Sudanlı bir kızın iki parallel öyküsünü içermektedir. İlk öykü, lüks yaşam tarzını babasının siyasi kariyerine borçlu olan, şımarık ve cahil, Batılı yaşam tarzını benimsenmiş, üniversite öğrencisi bir kızı anlatmaktadır. Diğer öykü ise, Londra'daki zorlu koşullarla başa çıkmaya çalışan, terk edilip sürgün edilmiş Najwa'dan bahsetmektedir. Butler, cinsel kimliğin söylemsel bir kurgu olduğuna, zaman içinde gelişerek edimsellik (performativity) bir biçimde tekrar tekrar üretilen bir olgudur. Bu nedenle kimlik, edim (performance) biçimleri değiştikçe yeniden şekillenir. Najwa'nın kimliği, edim biçimlerinin dönüşmesine bağlı olarak değişir. Çeşitli eylemlerin ve davranışların sergilenmesi Najwa'nın yeni cinsel kimliğini şekillendirir. Tez; cinsel kimlik, edim ve edimsellik terimlerinin açıklamalarıyla başlamaktadır. Sonrasında ise, Minare romanı yazar Leila Aboulela'nın hayatı bağlamında ele alınmaktadır. Son olarak roman; cinsel kimlik, edim ve edimsellik terimleri bağlamında tahlil edilmiştir. The thesis aims to analyse three Butlerian terms, gender identity, performance, and performativity in Minaret, a novel by Leila Aboulela. The novel includes two parallel stories of a Sudanese girl. The first story is of a spoilt and an ignorant westernized university girl whose luxurious life relies on her father's political career; the other story is of deserted and exiled Najwa who tries to cope with difficult circumstances in London. Butler believes that gender identity is a discursive construct, something that is produced and reproduced progressively and performatively. Thus, identity is shaped and re-shaped continuity when performative patterns change. Najwa's identity changes when performative patterns which cover it disappear. The performance of different acts and gestures shapes Najwa's new gender identity. The thesis starts with the explanation of the terms gender identity, performance, and performativity. Later, Minaret is discussed in relation to the life of the author Leila Aboulela. Finally, the novel is analyzed in relation to terms gender identity, performance, and performativity.
