Metaforun işlevi, herhangi bir kavram ve düşüncenin daha az sözcükle ve sanatsal olarak ifadesini mümkün kılmaktır. Aristoteles'in özellikle Retorik adlı eserinde metaforun işlevi, salt edebi bir figür olmanın çok ötesindedir. Modern dönemde metafor üzerine yapılan çalışmalar göstermiştir ki, metaforlar sadece dilde değil, insanın düşünce, tercih ve eylemlerinde önemli bir işleve sahiptir. Bu doğrultuda günümüz metafor anlayışında, yalnızca bir mecaz sanatından değil, varlık aleminin anlaşılabilmesinin ve aktarılabilmesinin vazgeçilmez bir aracından söz edilmektedir. Bu çalışmamızda Aristoteles'in özellikle Retorik adlı eseriyle biçimlenen klasik metafor anlayışına getirilen eleştirel yaklaşımları, bu eleştirilerin ortak noktalarından hareketle değerlendirmeyi ve bu eleştiriler paralelinde işaret edilen metaforun farklı işlevlerini ortaya koyabilmeyi amaçladık. The function of metaphor is to make it possible for any concept and idea to express with fewer words and less artistically. The function of metaphor in the work of Aristotle, especially in his Rhetoric, is far beyond being a purely literary figure. Studies in the modern period on metaphors have shown that, metaphors have an important role in human thought, preference and action, not just on the language. Accordingly, in today's understanding of metaphor is not merely a metaphorical art but an indispensable tool for the understanding and transmission of the universe of being is mentioned. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the critical approaches to Aristotle's classical metaphor understanding, especially shaped by his Rhetoric, based on the common points of these criticisms, and to reveal the different functions of the metaphor pointed out in parallel with these criticisms.
