Mevcut tez İrlanda doğumlu Amerikalı yazar Frank McCourt'ın tanınmış anı yazısı Angela'nın Külleri’nde çocukluk temasına odaklanmakla birlikte, fakirliğin McCourt ailesindeki karakter oluşumuna etkilerini incelemektedir. Eser “yaşamyazarlığı” şemsiye tabirinin altında olan anı yazısı türüne aittir. Tez aynı zamanda umutsuz fakir yaşam şartlarının üstesinden gelen McCourt ailesinin mücadelesini anlatmayı amaçlamaktadır. Frank McCourt bazı eleştirmenler ve Limerick halkı tarafından yalancılıkla suçlanmış, para kazanma amacı güderek zavallı ve bedbaht İrlandalı çocukluğunu abarttığı öne sürülmüştür. Tüm bunlara rağmen saygın eleştirmenler tarafından ise bir hayli olumlu eleştiriler almıştır. Frank'in bedbaht çocukluğundan olgunluğa olan gelişimi ve dönüşümü, sefil ama umutlu çocukluk yılları doğrultusunda analiz edilmiştir. Mevcut tez hayatın zorluklarının yazarı depresyona ve eylemsizliğe sürümek yerine nasıl güçlendirdiğini betimlemektedir. The present thesis focuses on the childhood of the Irish born American writer Frank McCourt in his well-known book Angela’s Ashes, and how poverty impacts McCourt and his family members in terms of their character formation. The book under discussion is related to the memoir genre, which is now considered under the umbrellaterm “life-writing”. Another aim of this thesis is to explain how McCourt and his family overcame their desperately poor living conditions. Frank McCourt was blamed by some Limerick people and critics for being a liar, exaggerating his miserable Irish childhood and having done this only with the purpose of gaining money from the book. However, he received much positive criticism by the most of reputable critics too.The development and transformation of McCourt from his miserable childhood to maturity are broadly analysed within his squalid but hopeful childhood years. The thesis shows how the hardships of life strengthen the writer rather than lead him to depression and inertia. Keywords: Frank McCourt, impact, poverty, critics, miserable Irish childhood. |
