Uluslararası arenada, ekonomik bir topluluk olmak amacıyla yola çıkan Avrupa Birliği, siyasi, sosyal ve hukuki bir birlik olarak bu varlığını pekiştirmiştir. Bunların ortaya çıkmasında Birlik içerisinde temel hakların daha fazla korunması ve bunun için atılan adımların büyük katkısı olmuştur. Bu çalışma, özellikle Lizbon Antlaşması ile AB‟nin demokratikleşmesi bakımından gelinen noktayı ve Birliğin temel hak koruması bakımından katettiği ilerlemeleri değerlendirmek amacıyla hazırlanmıştır |

The European Union, which set out to become an economic community in the internatioanl arena has consolidated its presence as a political, social and legal unity. During the emergence of these improvements, better protection of fundamental rights within the Union and the steps taken for that purpose have been a major contribution.
