The importance of dental assessment for identificationIdentification is one of the most important subject in Forensic Sciences. The determination of features thatrecognize a living person or a corpse from others is called identification. It can be done by examination ofbody, a tissue of body or signs. The identification is primary importance in cases the deceased person isdecomposed irrecognizable, burned or dismembered. Especially dental identification assumes an importantrole in the identification of corpse when postmortem changes have occured. Because the principal featureof dental evidence is that it is often preserved after death. Each dentist has a responsibility to know theforensic issues associated with his or her profession. Evaluation in the forensic field requires asist to legalauthorities, collection and maintain legible and legally acceptable dental records in the identification ofvictims and suspects. Because comparison of antemortem records and postmortem dental findings, is oneof the most effective, easy and accurate method to identify a corpse. ÖZETKimliklendirme Adli Bilimlerin önemli konularından birini oluşturmaktadır. Canlı ya da ölü bir kimseyi tanıma ve başkalarından ayırmaya yarayan özelliklerin tespit edilmesine kimliklendirme denir. Ölü veya canlı kimsenin muayenesi ile yapılabildiği gibi insan vücuduna ait bir parçanın, bir dokunun, iz ve belirtilerin incelenmesiyle de yapılabilir. Kimliklendirme; tanınamayacak derecede cesetlerin bozulduğu, yandığı ya da parçalandığı durumlarda birincil öneme sahiptir. Özellikle dişten kimliklendirme, ölüm sonrası değişiklikler oluştuğunda cesedin kimliklendirilmesinde önemli rol üstlenir. Çünkü dişlerin ölüm sonrası kalımlılıkları en önemli özellikleridir.Her diş hekimi için mesleğiyle ilgili olan adli konuları bilme sorumluluğu vardır. Adli alanda değerlendirme, kurbanların ve şüphelilerin belirlenmesinde yetkililere yardımcı olunması, yasal olarak kabul edilebilir, okunabilir dental kayıtların toplanmasını ve korumasını gerektirmektedir. Çünkü ölüm öncesi diş kayıtları ile ölüm sonrası diş bulgularının karşılaştırılması bir cesedin kimliğinin tespit edilmesinde en etkili, kolay ve doğru yöntemlerden biridir.
